To move from state to private in Y2?

Hi all, I'm looking for a bit of advice, and possibly to hear from people who have done something similar.

My DS is in Y1 at the moment, at a state primary school he's happy at. He's made some friends, and academically he's getting on well.

Thing is, there are two independent schools practically on our doorstep, and both are brilliant. The kids in the classes at both schools are all relatively local too. We were originally going to send him to one of these schools in reception, but decided it would be better to see how state went first (on the basis that it would be easier moving from state to private than the other way around).

We were always planning on considering this move in Y3, but I just feel like he would really thrive at one of these schools now, and it's hard to put it off when I feel like the environment would suit him so well! Whilst he's doing well at his current school, there are also very few clubs and opportunities there. He's naturally a very cautious and risk-averse child, and I genuinely feel he would benefit from being in an environment where he's challenged and pushed out his comfort zone, in a safe and nurturing environment. I also worry that things might step up a bit in Y3 at the independent schools, and friendships may be more cemented, so if we do it sooner then it may be easier. I'm not sure.

I'd love to hear from anyone who may have done something similar. My biggest reservation is obviously that he's happy right now, but who knows what the future holds. I just can't shake the feeling that he can actually enjoy his education at one of these schools, and maybe even stumble into a hobby that he loves. More than anything I want him to have opportunities to explore different interests and hobbies, and to build his confidence and resilience.

Thanks for reading

@Rocknrollstar yes both do. They have around 14 kids in the class currently

I can’t see anything in your post about why you wouldn’t? If you’re gonna move him in year 3 anyway then why wait?

Are they 1-form schools?

If not, then find out when the schools mix up classes. Round here the private schools mix up classes in y3 - so that makes it a much easier time to join as kids are all making new friends anyway. Also there are more new joiners in y3 so again it’s an easier time to join rather than being the only new kid.

@SausalitoSue I think I'm just terrified of moving him when he's happy right now. If it doesn't work out, I've pulled him away from a happy environment and I'll only have myself to blame for it. I'm doing it for the right reasons, but it still scares me. I always read "never move a happy child"
