interested in opinions about the package ‘Up learn’
My DH & I are in ‘loco parentis’ for our friend’s son ( Y12). His subjects are Maths, Chemistry & Biology. He did very well in his GCSEs considering English is not his first language ( it’s Mandarin) but he sees himself as being ‘more British now’.
My husband & I are both teachers ( well I’m ‘retired’) - we feel that the school has really pushed this package and not sure it’s been the best way forward for his style of learning. Not all the students have the package.
My question :🙋🏼‍♀️ has anyone had any experience with it? Best way to use it? I’ve had a look at the maths - and must say the first tutorial was a real put off! ( this was one of my subjects that I taught years ago).
Any help/advice really appreciated
PS reaching out as he’s found the leap from GCSE huge and all this ‘independent study’ hard to organise.
TIA

I've never had any experience of Up Learn but I'd get him to try Seneca. It doesn't have the tutor support (but if he's in school he has his teachers), but it's a great way to revise.

I was very familiar with all the online tuition companies through my previous job. I can’t comment on actually using it but Up Learn consistently got the best results for secondary school kids out of everything offered in the UK. This was a couple of years ago but I can’t imagine it’s changed vastly. You need to use it consistently but it can just be in 10-15 minutes bursts, so good for kids who don’t want to sit for an hour once a week or whatever. I’d definitely recommend persevering with it. There are tutorials on how to use it on their YouTube.

Our school has used it for a few years now. The y12s find it a bit difficult to get to grips with, but by y13 it shows itself to be a real game changer. We’ve had the best results ever since using it.

it’s not perfect (nothing is), but if the school are paying then use it.

I’ve just posed a question about Uplearn which you might be able to help with. It’s been recommended to me for my daughter to ensure she gets top grades in biology and chemistry A levels. She’s just sitting her GCSEs this summer, but was wondering when is a good time to start with Uplearn? It looks pricey, but I want to do all I can to support her. It’s been recommended to me that she reads ahead in her subjects so that when she goes into lessons she is just clarifying areas of uncertainty and a,so effectively using them as revision and committing the knowledge to long term memory, as it will not be new to her. This seems like a great idea and a type of learning that would suit her - so just wondering if Uplearn might help with that, in introducing the topics ahead of school lessons. Can you help with more info about Uplearn and ways in which it can be used?
