Temporarily moving during school application

We currently live in the catchment area for the primary school we want our son to go to.

We are thinking about doing some building work to our house, which is likely to require us to move out for a few months or maybe even a year (depending on how slow the builders are!). During this time we'd need to rent somewhere else to live. Ideally we'd be nearby, but there aren't many rentals round here so we might need to move a bit further away.

We will be applying for primary schools for our son at the end of this year (for Sept 26 entry). If we are temporarily living elsewhere, will that be considered to be our home at the time of application? If so we'll probably delay or rethink getting the work done.

Just to be clear - I'm not attempting to move temporarily into a catchment area (I know that's not allowed!) I'm worried that temporarily moving out will make that our home for the application.

Often they count the owned property over the rental property as the real address

How would they know you were at a temporary address? Keep your mailing address the same and just forward your mail. You will be back there soon so it is not like you are going to be caught out.

A friend did this. She was told to apply from her "real" (owned) home, rather than the temporary one. It's not like anyone else is living there. It's just not habitable for a period so you have to stay elsewhere.

Excellent, thanks everyone. I assumed that was the case but given it's a popular school I didn't want to accidently break the rules and end up having to go to a school miles away for years!

We looked at moving into a catchment for grammar and found out that’s considered fraud. I suspect you’re fine.

I've seen plenty of posts on here about reporting people who've used a different address to where they live, so I guess I was worried someone would do that!

It isn't a different address to where you actually live. If you weren't renting you may be living with family or in a campervan on the drive.
If you don't tell anyone how will they know.

even if they did find out the house is your home and the rental temporary due to necessity, not fraudulent, as you will be back at current address builders pending
