Is there a website or supplier that sells packs of about ten books for reluctant slow readers.

I have a class of about ten students with very low literacy, they don;t read much better than my six year old. Any books I find that are the right literacy level are too babyish. I also want to buy about ten, I know the bookpeople do some great deals on books but they are all off different titles. As I am having to pay myself I don;t want to have to spend too much, they are eleven and twelve by the way.

Check on the bookpeople website for books published by Barrington Stoke.

They are written specifically for children with literacy difficulties.

My dyslexic children love them. They are aged 12 and 10.

Oh sorry, just realised that you want 10 of the same title.
I'm clearly in need of some sleep!

captain underpants i think is for around the 6-8 age range

Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey (Ages 7- 12)
George and Harold are up to their old tricks again. Last time they hypnotized Principal Krupp into believing he was Captain Underpants. This time, they accidentally bring to life an army of carnivorous toilets and their evil boss, the tyrannical Turbo Toilet 2000. Can anyone save the school from the terrifying attack of the Talking Toilets? This looks like a job for Captain Underpants!

I heard something on womens hour a while ago, about some serious authors who had written some small books especially for adults with low literacy. With real grown up plots, but very careful with straightforward sentence structure and limited vocabulary.

Will try googling.

Am not sure custardo, I may order one to see what they think, or perhaps check with the support teacher.

It is so hard buying books for their maturity but also reading level.

This links to an article about "Open Door" books, which might help.

Just read the OP properly, sorry I thought you were talking adults.

twinsetandpearls · 11/05/2008 23:31

That is quite a bargain on the book people website as I have checked the suppliers website and they are a fiver each, dp is not amused that I am having to buy the books so I want to limit what I spend.

Hopefully they may have made some progression by adulthood but it is slow going.

Have emailed a link to the house with no name to another teacher to see what she thinks.

I should be on commission from Barrington Stoke.
I am like an unpaid cheerleader for them.

I discovered the Zac Power books recently for my dyslexic 9 year old. Both my boys are dyslexic and I have struggled for years trying to find books they can read that aren't for little kids. I just looked on amazon for you and someone is selling a whole lot of them new for 99p. Just search under "Zac Power". They are definitely boys books and would probably be ok up to around 11 in terms of content.

Are you their English teacher, twinsetandpearls?

May I be so bold as to ask if there is any chance of someone actually teaching them to read?
