Options evening

Help.
I work at a school that my daughter is hopefully going to start in September.
I have been off work for four weeks with fractured ribs. The admissions lady has not let me know that the options evening is tonight .
Do you think I could contact her to check it is ok to go. Also does it look bad that I go and am still off work with a fit note .
I am looking to start back on Monday.

How old is DD? If it's A-Level options, could she go herself?

I think as you will be back soon, and have been signed off rather than self-certified, you are not doing anything wrong, but if it is avoidable that might be safest.

Carol52 · 06/02/2025 12:37

Thank you no this is for year 9 options.
I have edited the lady at school but she has not replied.
I feel really awkward but like I said I am due to be bank on Monday. Although I still have slit of pain.
She can't go by herself.
I just feel the longer it takes her to reply the more worried I am

There's a difference between being fit for a whole day of work, and fit for a meeting lasting an hour or so. Being signed off doesn't mean you aren't allowed to do anything, although obviously going for a run would not look good.

It's not clear whether you're invited to the meeting. However if your daughter is likely to be joining the school by September, it makes sense for you to know about the options (assuming this is a "telling you about the options" evening and not a "meet your child's teachers to discuss progress and whether it might be a good GCSE for them" evening). It's definitely worth asking whether it is okay for you to attend. Whether they will want an options form in from someone who is not yet on roll is doubtful. They're likely to work out blocks and groups on the basis of those already on roll, and any who join subsequently will get slotted in.

Treeleaf11 · 06/02/2025 14:51

If she isn't actually at the school yet I'm not sure whether she would be invited along. If it's a state school you presumably haven't applied yet.

Snorlaxo · 06/02/2025 14:53

The evening will surely be for year 9 parents?

TokyoSushi · 06/02/2025 14:54

I don't quite get it, is your DD in Y9 at the school?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 06/02/2025 15:06

If your daughter doesn't have a place I wouldn't go.

What do the ribs have to do with it?

I'm unsure what you are actually asking tbh.

LIZS · 06/02/2025 15:06

If she does not yet have a place at the school, why would she be invited? Is it a private school with 13+ entry that you are awaiting outcome for?

Carol52 · 06/02/2025 15:11

Parents and children. We have applied and debate I work there . I thought I would ask but because I have been off work it felt awkward

I have been off work with fractured ribs and for back on Monday. Because we are looking for my daughter to start the school I work at in September we thought it would be a good idea to have a look at the options available. My reason for the post is going to work but bro g off enrich do you think it is ok

Most of the information you need will be in the options booklet.
I wouldnt worry about being off sick.

Im confused that if you have applied and are given an in year place you have to take up the place in a couple of weeks, unless its a private school.

LIZS · 06/02/2025 16:11

It is fine you can fulfil a parental role if for a limited time, but just not sure her presence is warranted as she is not yet a student. Issue might be if you said you cannot drive to work, but then did to the event, for example.

mitogoshigg · 06/02/2025 16:16

If she isn't enrolled currently I do t think you can go along.

trickortrickier · 06/02/2025 17:54

Is she starting Yr7 or Yr9 in September?

clary · 06/02/2025 22:54

Are you hoping she will start there or does she have a place? As a PP says, if she has a in-year place you would usually need to take it up asap. Which might be better anyway as then she could make her option choices in the usual way?

Or yy is it a private school with a year-9 entry point?

My impression from the OP's other thread about their DD possibly moving schools is that it's a state school with a waiting list for the year group, but the OP believes that a place will be created for their DD purely on the strength of the parent being a member of staff.

Treeleaf11 · 07/02/2025 08:08

In that case no she can't go to an options evening at a school she is on the waiting list for.

RedSkyDelights · 07/02/2025 10:04

Your child isn't at the school currently. I wouldn't expect them to be invited.
If they do get a place to start in Year 9, then they will be sent the information about options then.

I think it would be highly awkward for your child to go. She won't know anyone else, and the session will be geared round providing information for children already at the school who will be familiar with normal school routines, current programmes of study etc.

Laserwho · 08/02/2025 07:46

Specific pupils and parents and usually invited to these events. You carnt just turn up.

PensionPuzzle · 08/02/2025 13:40

We've got options evening next week, I don't expect to be speaking to anyone other than students and families that are currently on our roll in year 9.

However OP you haven't made it clear what year your child is in for us to work out if the options event is even relevant to them.

Carol52 · 08/02/2025 18:33

Hello just a update we did go to options evening and ut was really beneficial
