Bethany, Battle Abbey or Worth School

That’s is really

im looking for peoples experience with the above schools

14 years old with ADHD (has an EHCP which I know not all private schools are a fan of so not getting hopes up of an offer but keen to at least explore!)

needs small class sizes
flexi boarding option
relatively good SEN but overall doesn’t need a ridiculous amount of support - no TA or 1-2-1 needed, just small classes to lessen distraction

when googling - those three schools came up as having but would prefer to hear first hand experience

have booked in for visits too

Bethany was one of our top choices for our moderately dyslexic and low confidence DD. We loved it and it would have been a great fit for DD. The support is impressive, highly trained teaches adapting lessons to suit all needs and none. Lovely atmosphere and great facilities. I loved their ethos of educating the whole child. Tbh all it boiled down to really was that ultimately we decided wanted all-girls so went with our other top choice.

Worth has changed so so much (for the better) since Stuart McPherson became head - (he was at Eton college for 15yrs) he has really turned it around - I’d say it is a school that flies slightly under the radar in terms of reputation - it can now compete on almost all counts with some of the very very best

You’re welcome - I’m in private Ed - I’ve seen all the schools on your list and I really would
say worth beats them by a country mile !

Hi Bruce2
I am interested in what you thought of these schools? I am mainly interested Battle Abbey, Bethany and Claremont. Both my kids are ND, 1 is adhd and 1 is autistic, both academically capable but both need a really nurturing school with great pastoral care and small class sizes.

So my daughter has ADHD and we eventually went for Cobham Hall - which has recently turned Co-ed.
We just felt it was a better fit for her with smaller class sizes and very good SEN - they really “got it”
The other schools were good, don’t get me wrong, but Cobham just felt more of a fit for her.

Ah thanks for your reply. Yes I saw that one too. Are you happy there? I have a son (although he's not a typical sporty boy, he's geeky and academic) so I'm looking for co-ed ideally and Cobham looked like mainly girls?

saltyann · 07/09/2025 11:27

And meant to add that my other one is a girl (and has ADHD)

Yes you’re right it does look all girls - and I’d say 85% are but it turned co-ed about 2 years ago I think so boys are trickling through!

Eastbounre College was our first choice actually if I’m honest but we couldn’t make it work financially and Sutton Valence is another great school for SEN and definitely more boys. That would have been another top choice over Bethany or Battle Abbey for us.

very happy with Cobham for our daughter however

Following! We are also thinking of Bethany and Worth for our DC with autism & ADHD or maybe Bedes which has also been suggested but is further away? Ideally a school that understands the importance of movement breaks and sensory regulation? They also use very quiet (not disruptive) humming to regulate emotions so ideally a school that understood this too. Small class sizes and a real nurture focus are a must. If they feel too contained it can lead to outbursts as they then struggle to self regulate. Any insight in these schools? Willing to travel for right school. There current school has been great and they have thrived academically.

Analysis is needed first and foremost when choosing schools.
