Take on Grammar schools please I clearly if o would try afford it would mean living hand to mouth, not be able to afford for the second child and definitely wouldn't be able to afford the school trips.
How worth it are they ? X

Why would you put one through a fee paying school, live hand to mouth but not give your second child the same opportunities? That's a sure way to build resentment between siblings.

You're better off staying state and using the money to spend equally on both children for extra curricular activities.

Free, good education, massive classes

"Grammars" are not equal especially if you mean one if those which are fee paying and retain the title. Do you have a specific one in mind?

PurpleLass1234 · 01/02/2025 11:27

Grammar schools are non-fee paying, certainly the one my children attends are, so not sure why you could afford to send one but not the other? Trips etc are non-compulsory, so no requirement for children to attend, and this doesn't adversely affect them?

Also if PP or other difficult circumstances they will frequently step up to help with travel/ trips etc.

Grammar schools are state schools, selective / very selective entry but state schools nonetheless.

there are some indies that do have “grammar” in their title - Reigate an obvious example - and conversely a load of state grammars which don’t. Which possibly creates unnecessary confusion.

Private schools are for people who can comfortably afford it. There is nothing wrong grammar school. Anecdotally, I think people attend grammar schools tends more traditional jobs such as lawyers, doctors etc whereas I see more private school student doing art and creative based careers.

I know in general grammar schools are state (free) although there are a selection of private grammar schools in the UK. The OP refers to living hand to mouth if they went for a grammar so I assumed they meant a private school.

Assuming that you are talking about an academically selective fee-paying (independent) school with or without the actual word 'Grammar' in its name, and not a state grammar school...

If your household income is such that to have your DC attend the school woukd mean 'living hand to mouth', the first question is, Why would you even contemplate this? The second, Have you investigated whether your DC would qualify for a bursary, based on yoir income, should s/he does well enough in the entrance assessment(s) to be offered a place?

If you are just for some reason imagining that attending a state grammar school means expensive compulsory trips, then you are you are worrying completely unnecessarily. There will be trips which the school is obliged to offer to all, but they will usually have financial assistance available for those who qualify for it.

You don't pay fees at a state grammar school so you shouldn't struggle as a parent.
