Does English Literature and English Language count as one or two GCSE's?
Following are her subjects

English Literature
English Language
Maths
History
Biology
Chemistry
Physics
Religious studies
Life Skills
French

Also studying separate sciences, how many GCSE's award she will get?

Looking forward for replies 🙂

Assuming ‘Life Skills’ isn’t a GCSE subject, she’ll get 9 GCSEs.

Whole · 29/01/2025 10:56

College entry admission requirements are, 6 GCSEs at Grade 6, including English and Mathematics.
If there are 9 GCSEs, she would be fine.

When you say she is studying three sciences is she doing triple which is a grade per subject, or double where you still study all three sciences but get two GCSEs with a average grade for the lot?

Either way she'll have what she needs for College

Whole · 29/01/2025 11:01

She is doing Triple Sciences.

Yeh nine GCSEs assuming life skills isn’t one.

Eng lit and Eng lang are very different specs with very different exams. Lit sees dc analysing Shakespeare and (most likely ) Dickens, while in lang they will be writing creatively and persuasively and analysing unseen passages.

Thanks for all replies, also can you guide us she wants

English Lit
History
Psychology for A levels

According to my understanding, Psychology Degrees in Uni requirements are Bio, Chemistry.
But she does not want to study them.
With the above combination what are the career opportunities?

DD was considering a Psychology degree and didn't need Biology or Chemistry, she was doing Psychology A level though.
She was very surprised by all the Maths she needed for her Psych A Level though, she was fine but I think some people on the course struggled

Whole · 29/01/2025 12:02

Thats great, will your child go for BSC Psychology?

No, she actually decided to do something completely different

clary · 29/01/2025 13:45

Friend of DD did a psych degree without bio or chemistry A levels. She did take maths tho (and yy there is a lot of maths in psych A level) which is regarded as a science. Do all psych degrees require a separate science A level?

Otherwise with history and Eng lit she could go fir a degree in either of those, or the many subjects that don't mind what A levels like philosophy or class civ or criminology or politics or sociology.

itsnotgreatisit · 27/07/2025 10:50

Biology would be useful for psychology degree or even maths. Not so much chemistry, but she can get into a psych degree with her chosen A level subjects.

She may change her mind during the A levels so probably best to take the subjects she enjoys the most and see where it leads her. But

Laserwho · 31/07/2025 16:34

I would recommend you go on the the university websites and see what's required for the courses she's interested in. My son did this before deciding which a levels he needed to ensure he was doing the right ones.

icecreamfortea · 01/08/2025 15:55

There are only a handful of Psychology degrees that require 2 sciences at A level. Most require 1 and Psychology counts. My DC applied to a few that said 2 sciences were preferable but they got 5 good offers with only 1.
