Hi, I recently had an to make a statement to the police as a man i was seeing for a few weeks threatened to burn my house down with my children in it as he was angry that I was ending things with him. I am wondering if the police will pass this onto social services? Children were not in the house when the threat was made and he was never around the kids. Also if social services get involved will they be in contact with the children’s school? The man was arrested that same day. Thank you

Very likely police will report in to SS as a safeguarding alert. They will then contact you to assess the risk and this will determine what happens next. There may be no action and the concern closed or there may be further meetings.

We have a system called Operation Encompass. If the police attend a domestic violence incident, whether the children are there or not, we receive notification that an incident has occurred- no details, just date and time. This is so we can keep a discrete eye on the children involved to make sure they have a listening ear available if they DO want to talk( we are not allowed to raise it ourselves). The incident is also reported to Children's Services. Your county MAY have something similar and the incident MAY fall under this.

Unless this man is on remand it would probably be a good idea to alert the school yourself. He sounds like a real danger and the fact he included your children in the threat is really worrying. If he never met them you might assume they're safe (how would he be able to identify them?), but in my experience of working with men like this they can be extremely obsessive and have their ways.

Yes he is on remand. He was not granted bail, however I am scared for my safety for when he does get out.

What a worry, I really feel for you. Definitely consider telling the school, it sounds like you could do with the support (as well as it being important for keeping the kids safe).

@Coops2025

Operation Encompass is a safeguarding tool that links schools, police and children's services. It's meant to ensure that the wellbeing, emotional and physical, of children is considered as part of domestic violence reporting. For schools, it's a " red flag" notification. Something that makes us more alert for any signs of distress in a child who has been affected by DV.
