Music lessons?

Hi, I wonder if anyone has any thoughts on a good way to help my ds (5) develop his love of music.We aren't really a musical family (we love music and have it on a lot, but no-one plays an instrumenst or can read muisc, so I feel were not much use to him on that score).I was taken aside at his school where he does recorder and told he is musically talented and we shoud get him started on another instrument. It seems a bit young to me. I think piano lessons would put him off (and we don't have a plano!) but in my mind I imagine there being a music workshop where kids can try out the instruments and really enjoy themslves without it being like a lesson. If anyone knows of anthing like that in London area I'd be really grateful to hear.

I don't know about London specifically, but many music schools and colleges run that kind of thing for that age group. DS went to one up here and it was a great introduction to music and led on to instrumental lessons a couple of years later.

Does you local library have a music department (ours does). If so check out the notice board for ads for groups similar to what you are looking for.

There is the Centre for Young Musicians www.cym.org.uk but I think may be for slightly older children. They may have some useful information.

Do persist with it - my ds was like this (but I am musical so expected it) and started with piano around that age. Music has been the making of him and has opened so many doors for him.

Whereabouts in London, and really, the school should be able to tell you what is available in your borough themselves!
Blackheath Conservatoire offers a scheme just like the one you describe, in SE London - programme of "tasters" of different types of instrument.
A friend with dcs in LB Lewisham has had this sort of tryout scheme offered through the school itself, which is fab. Her ds plays a trombone which is almost as big as he is

There is Chamber Tots through the Wigmore Hall but I think in that case they come out and run workshops at the school?
