Wetherby Kensington vs Brighton College Prep Kensington

Hi everyone,

We’re currently looking for the right school for our son, who will be starting reception in September 2026, and have narrowed our options down to Wetherby Kensington (WK) and Brighton College Prep Kensington (BCPK).

Wetherby Kensington is boys-only, with a smaller footprint and limited outdoor space. It seems to have a strong academic and exam focus, with good reviews and enthusiastic support from parents.

On the other hand, Brighton College Prep Kensington felt vibrant and energetic during our visit and is spacious and very well equipped. The children were confident and articulate, and the school has the added benefit of a large garden. Logistically, it’s also easier for us, as it runs through to age 13, whereas WK would require a transition to Wetherby Prep after four years.

We’d love to hear any insights you might have about BCPK in particular, as Wetherby’s offering seems well-documented and clear. Since Brighton College only took over the school last year, there’s less of a track record available, and we’re keen to understand parent's real experience there.

Academically, our son seems to be progressing well, so we’re more inclined towards a school that offers a well-rounded education so he can thrive on other matters too. Based on that, BCPK feels like a strong contender, but we’ve struggled to find much feedback so far.

Any advice, experiences, or insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Londonlearner,
We are a very, very happy BCPK family and previously Wetherby parents. I’d be happy to PM you and answer any questions you have. I’m so pleased that you have seen those things in our children’s school as we feel that too!

Presumably Brighton college prep is geared towards them boarding at Brighton college at 13? Whereas Wetherby you can send them to other prep schools after the pre-prep / or Wetherby and Wetherby again? I’d look at the long term trajectory myself. But for small children the outside space and less of a trek to school matters most.

Just as a response to the comment above, this isn’t true, so don’t let that put you off. We are not looking at Brighton College (we aren’t interested in boarding) and a large number of families aren’t. Ask to see the destinations so far (I did and was impressed) A decent number are going to / looking for Brighton but the majority are looking at other schools closer to London. Also a good number looking at 11+, although I think that is mostly girls and I assume you just have boys if Wetherby is on your radar. I think they’ve also had a couple of 7+ to KSC and Westminster this year.

Thanks @ClareF1921 - I've sent you a PM as it would be really great to get your insight. We wouldn't be keen on boarding either so pleased to hear there are other options.

We moved our son to BCPK a year ago and sadly we regret it. The school is disorganised and it seems as if they're still figuring out a lot of things. Communication is poor making it difficult to know what is going on, and when asked it's often difficult to get a response. There has been a lot of turnover in teachers, with most not working out their notice period (it's not clear why they're not required to adhere to the notice period). The outside space is a plus though. Given you're looking for entry at Reception in Sep 2026, there is time for the school to find its feet by then.

That is such a shame - that hasn't been our experience. Maybe we are different year groups... The (very few) teachers I have seen leave, I've interpreted (maybe wrongly) as strategic moves in the right direction. We have a new maths this term who is a significant improvement.... I hope things improve for you.

@ClareF1921 would love to hear more about your positive experience at BCKP. We are considering it for our daughter vs Thomas and single girls academic schools like pembrisge

@anret would love to hear more about your experience esp around teaching

Now that some time has passed since this thread first started, are their any further comments and experiences for BCPK?

My son is signed up for year 7&8. Hoping we have made the right choice.

Hubby also working in Kensington, and we are also staying there, so thought it would be good to all be in the same location for ease of travel to and from school/work.

Would also be keen to connect with some parents / children before he starts, we arrive in UK in August. 😊
