Do any of you know of any schools who have got rid of their Years 7 and 8? And did the school then go on to do ok/survive?

Yes The Mall in Twickenham but they have opened a nursery and gone co-Ed.

Stroud School in Hampshire have recently dropped their Yr7&8. They've become KES prep. (they have been a feeder for KES for ten years).

Willington prep in Wimbledon did and went co-ed at the same time (and added a 3+ nursery)

All of our local preps have dropped year 7 and 8. It’s resulted in selection at the local private secondaries / grammars becoming more difficult at 10+ but conversely easier at 13+ to the local public boarding school because the kids mostly come from state school.

Sorry why are they losing these year groups?

One of the preps near us (home counties) has, They've increased the number of places in year 3 upwards. They always lost a lot of children to the state grammars at year 7 and there are not really many 13+ options in the area, so demand wasn't there for year 7 and 8

Brighton College Prep have just announced they’re getting rid of years 7 & 8.

Sorry why are they losing these year groups?

Because more children do 11+ than 13+

Around here, in a Grammar school county, at least two preps which are part of 4-18 through schools have moved from a 4-13 and 13-18 structure to 4 to 11 and 11 to 18. One of them is now very clearly pitching for state school 11+ preparation rather than the previous assumption that most pupils in the prep would automatically transfer to the senior school.
