11+ HBS or Tiffin girls school

HSkomi · 31/10/2024 03:28

My DD is a very able girl and she is eligible to apply both HBS and Tiffin Girls School for yr7 entry. We didn’t do the open days for both school and still struggling to put which one on CAF as the first choice. Any suggestions or insiders’ information/news about both school?

If you ate in the catchment for Tiffin Girls, how is your DD going to get to and from HBS?

I assume they will probably move depending on which one she gets into.

We have to move for both schools. We didn’t go for the open days for neither schools. I assume my DD can get in any of them but we need to pick one for first choice. DD likes HBS but we like Tiffin and trying hard to convince her now.

@HSkomi , you said on the other thread that you live in Epsom so you might as well stay local.

SamPoodle123 · 31/10/2024 13:06

Make sure to have a back up school just in case. Both are very difficult to get in I’ve heard.

We have Nonsuch as a backup.

How sure are you that your DD will get a place there on March 3rd?

strawberrybubblegum · 01/11/2024 00:58

You should really have a non-selective backup as well.

Why didn't you visit the schools? Is there another open day in time? I found that visiting schools gave me a feel for their ethos and whether it matched our own, which I think is important.

I missed the open day date for both schools. Only listed four schools on the CAF. DD did really well on Sutton Mock tests.

I'm guessing you went for Tiffin, best of luck, your dd sounds well prepared. No doubt you are entering for the private schools too as she sounds like she has scholarship ability.

The poster knows her DD and how bright she is. Probably not necessary. We only applied for selectives as we were confident our DC would get in.

The OP only knows, for Nonsuch, that their DD 'did well in the Sutton mock tests' - these aren't like e.g. Prelims for Scottish state exams, which are taken by the same cohort as will be sitting the real thing a couple of months later, they are paid for practice tests open to any pupil whose parent applied and stumped up the fee on time, from wherever they live. So yes, she could have 'done well' against a London-wide cohort of intensively-tutored geniuses and tge local girls who didn't do a mock mainly did relatively poorly in the real thing. Or those who didn't do a mock could have generally done very well, enough of them who have applied for the school better than the OP's DD to bump her out of a national offer day place.

Yes, they also know that their DD passed both stages of the actual Sutton Grammar schools entrance tests, but not the actual final score, because this is not given this year, so there is no way of comparing actual standardised score achieved this year with offer scores under the relevant criterion in previous years.

So however clever the OP 'knows' their DD to be, not including a genuine fall-back as a CAF preference may backfire.

To pass HBS first round which is very hard and lucky already. DD had already got a place from her current school ( all through to 18 years old school). Sutton schools and her current school are the back up is enough. We wouldn’t send her to any non selective schools.

Agree. We only consider grammar schools for state schools.

Yeah. She is preparing for scholarship exams to saving some fees🥰.

Well done to my DD. She got offers from Tiffin Girls, St Paul’s Girls School, Guildford High School with Academic Scholarships and LEH with both Academic and Music Scholarships. She has decided to go to her first choice school SPG. 11+ has end and she is enjoying her time on gaming and music.

Yeah. We put down Tiffin as first choice and we didn’t want to move to North London. DD did get Academic Scholarships from Guildford High School and LEH plus Music Scholarship; She has also got an offer from SPG.
