How do I better understand what the KS1 national curriculum involves?

I have 5 year old DD who has just started Y1.

After first parents evening I have realised that I don't really know what the KS1 national curriculum is or what it involves.

I know the gov.uk website will have the formal documents, but can anyone with insider knowledge point me towards an easier breakdown of it (aka an idiots guide).

All insight welcome!

Thank you!

The school may have a curriculum plan on the website
BBC bitesize has resources for KS1 to roughly what will be taught.

But if you want to really know what is taught then just look at the National Curriculum, they aren't that technical.

Our school used to post their plan for each half term on the website so I knew what topics they were studying.

Yy, school website will be your first port of call.

for maths and english, cgp or collins workbooks can help you to see what a child will cover in each year.

For maths I’d recommend looking on the white rose website. It’s a free scheme of work which 90% of primary schools now use (and if they don’t, what they do use will be the same objectives anyway). You could just look at the overall year plan, or the more detailed plans, see what is taught each term. I think there’s also some resources for parents on there.

English - reading and spelling is mostly phonics based at least in y1. Have a look at the phonics scheme her school uses if you know, if not any phonics scheme as they all cover the same stuff just in a slightly different order. By end of y2 most pupils will be fairly fluent readers.
