Chemistry is usually essential for medical school applications. It’s biology that is optional (but realistically she should take both). If she really is keen + motivated to apply to medicine then your DD should be researching this herself!

Presumably she's looked at entry requirements for med schools? Currently most require chemistry, some require biology.
The third subject afaik can be almost anything. Which does she prefer? Is she likely to get a higher grade in one than the other.

The other question may be, if she changes her mind about medicine or doesn't get the grades, what else might she envision herself doing - which doors does her choice keep open or close?

Think it's chemistry that's the 'optional' one out of biology and chemistry - but in reality most med schools prefer both.

That's not what your link says!

Why give advice when you clearly don’t know what you’re talking about? Your link says the opposite….

These are the entrance requirements for Cambridge and Imperial, just as examples.

I wonder whether Chemistry, Biology and Physics at A Level would be an option for your daughter to consider.

I have heard it's not a great idea to do Physics without maths as it's a very 'mathsy' subject. I've read that some sixth forms don't even allow it.

Is Chemistry Maths and Biology a possibility.

Thanks everyone for the support

Errol the Dragon you are right

"The other question may be, if she changes her mind about medicine or doesn't get the grades, what else might she envision herself doing - which doors does her choice keep open or close?"

I will do some more research what options if not medicines.

I did Chem,Bio Math and got an A* in all 3 this year

If you are good at Math I'd say its wise to choose as then it is the easiest of those 3 by far. Psychology would also be fine I think but only if your daughter will enjoy it as I've heard many find it boring and it is a lot of writing

Chemistry and Bio link together in parts and doing Math helps with both of those but not so much that you need to take it to do them. GCSE level math does suffice

Physics from what my friends told me is very hard and for medicine unless your daughter was really passionate about it I would advise against it. I feel like if you didn't like it at GCSE don't let getting a good grade in it fool you into choosing it for A level

Remember that applying to medicine gives you a lot to do so definitely choose A levels wisely - if you choose the subjects you will find easier you can get the necessary grades without too much additional stress and focus on the other parts of the application process

Because of how busy Yr 12 and first half of Yr13 is, A levels sort of take a little bit of a back seat. It's important however to make sure that the predicted grades given are as high as possible but you can expect that proper revision for the final exams will occur after the final med school interview you do. Or maybe I was just badly organised. Definitely do stay on top of content as you do it though that helps at the end massively.

Any other questions let me know
