Uni timetable

Are there any students who can give me a rough idea of what your week looks?

How many lectures do you have a day? How long do they last?

How much time do you spend studying/ how much time are you expected to study?

It will vary hugely from uni to uni and in particular subject to subject. Can you be more specific?

SherlocksDeerstalker · 22/09/2024 19:33

Mine was 9-5 Monday to Friday. Friend had three lectures a week in 1st year. What course/uni do you mean?

TeenToTwenties · 22/09/2024 19:34

I think that will be incredibly course dependent.

Scientists may be almost full time with labs etc plus work on top. Someone studying say Eng Lit may have much less contact time but be expected to fo way more reading around the subject.

I did an AHP degree course so was Monday-Friday 9-5 with Wednesday afternoon off. This was both at uni and on placement blocks in the NHS.

And only 8 weeks holiday year, not the long uni ones so impossible to get a part time job due to moving round so much.

It varies so much, many of my housemates had 1 lecture a day, which started at 6pm! Seemed very odd to me.

What was yours like @Seriously79 when you were studying journalism?

VanCleefArpels · 22/09/2024 19:41

You need to specify the subject at least - arts /social science will be far fewer contact hours than most STEM subjects

TeenToTwenties · 22/09/2024 19:42

I had 8 week terms, in my first year I had 2hrs of lectures a day 6 days a week. Then a couple (?) of supervisions 2-1 weekly.
Plus loads of time trying to solve problems I couldn't.

There are way too many variables for anyone to give you any idea and the timetable will usually change every term

Watto1 · 22/09/2024 19:44

Varies so much by subject. My science degree was pretty much 9-4 every day but my housemate studying sociology was 8 hours a week. She did many more hours in the library doing research than I did though.

clary · 22/09/2024 20:24

Yeh so much variation between subjects as others say.

Couple of examples – DD took eng lit and had 2-3 lectures a week (available on line) and three face-to-face seminars of an hour each a week. She also had dissertation supervision during the term she did that. She had to read a book a week for each seminar tho.

Mate of Ds's did engineering and had a full 9-5 timetable every day.

🤣 definitely not studying journalism! DS is thinking about uni for next year, living at home and commuting. Just wondering if it would be possible

My dd has just started uni and one of her course mates is already regretting living at home, and trying to move into halls. You miss out on the social side.

Might be easier to commute from the 2nd year though. Timetable will vary enormously according to the subject and the institution.

If it would be commutable for work it'll be commutable for uni.

Our students don't have many contact hours but we expect them to be available Monday-Friday 9-5, with part-time jobs etc happening outside those hours.

Hi OP. Just finished my first year of maths and economics at a Russel group. Id have about 18 hours of lectures a week , and 6 seminars/tutorials fortnightly. Some people I know only have about 4-5 hours a week as their degree is very reading and writing, but not contact heavy so they have to work from home whereas for STEM there's more contact and lab time.

bridesmaid1024 · 22/09/2024 22:58

I'm currently doing social work -

Year 1

Year 2

Friday - 10 - 1pm

Year 3 - haven't had a look yet
