I'm trying to learn Italian (again) and was told that a good thing is to watch programmes - something simple for learner - with the option of subtitles but specifically for learners. So not TellyTubbies more 'mozzarella manufacture in the northern regions' type documentaries maybe...

I've seen things like Lingopie (they are subscriptions but don't seem to say what these are until you have done a 'free trial' which is irritating!

Any suggestions? Has anyone tried this?

How about a film that you know well, with Italian dubbing plus Italian subtitles?

TheSquareMile · 22/09/2024 12:49

@HoneyButterPopcorn

CityLit offers some of its Italian classes online - one of those might be the best option for you.

Language learning with Netflix is a cool app, ig you have a Netflix subscription

HoneyButterPopcorn · 22/09/2024 13:20

Oh we have Netflix! Is there a specific app?

A friend recommended getting a book in Italian and listening to an unabridged version alongside.

I'm doing some online classes - they are ok but I'm not very confident!

Cooking programs on YouTube are great. And I used to watch QVC in the target language. So repetitive, so really helpful. Try Giallo zafferano for Italian cooking.

I only ever got language learning with Netflix to work on my laptop. It has a whole load of features that allow you to slow down and go back to the last section to re-read or re-listen.

You can also get foreign language programmes on Netflix without the extension, but I found I wanst nearly fluent enough to enjoy them without English subtitles, which feels like it defeated the point!

@HoneyButterPopcorn , the Netflix tool is called Language Reactor now, not language learning anymore, https://www.languagereactor.com and you have to open it in Chrome and click on add extension. You have double subtitles.

Language Reactor

Language Reactor: your language learning toolbox. Discover, understand, and learn from native materials, including Netflix and YouTube. (Formerly called 'Language Learning with Netflix'.)

BBC IPlayer has episodes of an Italian crime drama Inspector Montalbano in Italian with English subtitles which are brilliant and quite easy to watch with the subtitles

most streaming services allow you to change the language and subtitles too so you can watch a lot of programmes dubbed into Italian with Italian or English subtitles. Disney + in particular is great for that but Netflix too

qwertasdfg · 23/09/2024 01:16

I love Montalbano! Great recommendation @fridaseyebrows
Yes to the movies, but the books are written in Sicilian, so not the easiest book to start with!

PopPopMusic · 23/09/2024 09:02

If you have Spotify or similar, you can listen to news podcasts or other spoken word and adjust the speed to something like 0.75 speed. There is a really useful podcast called slow Italian by SBS news - it's an Australian station aimed at the Italian speaking community there and is a magazine style discussion pod. In Bocca al lupo!

HoneyButterPopcorn · 24/09/2024 13:46

I learned a few choice phrases and slang from Montalbano - had my friends Italian mum in hysterics!
