Sats mocks

My child came back from school with sats mocks results beginning of the week. It says he got 98/96/100. But has been greater depth throughout year 5. Do I need to be worried?

Wete those the scores he would have got if he say the paper today?

He's got a year to improve

curlycurlymoo · 20/09/2024 18:09

They're just old papers used as practice.

So a year out, he's got the whole yr6 curriculum to cover!

Popsicales · 20/09/2024 18:11

Decent scores for this time in the year. I would say that I think it would be a push to go from the 96 to 110 GD score in a year, depending on what subject that is.

Thisismynewusernamedoyoulikeit · 20/09/2024 18:22

It's September. They've not started the year 6 curriculum and 40% of the papers are based off the year 6 curriculum (the rest is y3-5). So that's a good score and he has every chance off achieving greater depth.

SATS don't matter. They're for the school's benefit only. There is nothing to be concerned about.

curlycurlymoo · 20/09/2024 18:23

Thank you. I just have no idea and not had chance to speak to his teacher. I thought everything had been taught up until now and year 6 was just a recap of everything which was why I was a bit worried.

Really, really don't worry about this! They are a baseline to let the teachers know where the gaps are in their knowledge and what they need to focus on this year. There is a lot of content which will be covered between now and when they do SATs. Your dc's scores are fine for September.

Don't worry at all.

Some MNs get very worked up about Year 6 SATS but I've always see them as a challenge and an opportunity to show everyone how clever they can be.

Maybe (if they're genuinely capable) try to incentivise your child by offering them a suitable reward for a string of great marks? I did this with my kids and they all hit greater depth without headache.

Frankly, I think it's a great philosophy to give kids an awareness of testing and exams well before their GCSEs. It certainly helps to escape future exam anxieties.

@paularan I will try it. He's been doing really well so it came as a bit of a surprise to be honest.

@curlycurlymoo they do so much revision throughout y6, those are a good baseline score for the first month.
DS had similar scores at the start of y6 in a new school, having been out of formal education for most of the previous year. In the end he came out with 117/117/111. So it’s completely possible to soar once they have a more solid understanding of the style of the questions and have had time to focus on the gaps in knowledge.
By all means encourage effort, but sometimes rewarding the actual marks can be tricky, if something goes wrong on the day.
Good luck to your ds, it can feel never ending at this stage, I remember it well!

@Idontevenknowmyname thank you. I really appreciate the reply. I'll keep encouraging him and see what happens at the end of the year.
