Books for a 7yo reluctant reader

Hi I'm looking for some book ideas for my 7yo son. He can read fairly fluently but doesn't particularly enjoy it and never really reads for fun. Just wondering if anyone has hit on THE BOOK which a 7yo boy who thinks reading is 'boring' read all through without constant prodding and moaning.

Beast Quest.

Whole series of them - designed to be exciting adventure books - my ds was hooked at about that age!

Try comic style, like the Invesgators.

The Tree House books.

The thing that really got my dd into reading was The Beano.

You could try something like the Wigglesbottom Primary series, lots of them, very silly, illustrations, fairly short.

Or Bunny vs Monkey - lots of those too, very silly, more of your graphic novel style.

Dog Man

Bad Guys

Toto the Ninja Cat

13 Storey Treehouse

Dog man - my son is now obsessed. Quick tip - don't tell him you've bought it, just leave it out on the side in his room.

Mine liked Adam Kay's Incredible Inventions - not fiction but fun.

Agree with all PP also might be worth subscribing to The Phoenix and Beano as fund light silly comics that come weekly

zaxxon · 18/09/2024 16:44

Maybe try Andy Stanton's You're a Bad Man, Mr Gum – it's very funny. There are others in the series

crazycatladie · 18/09/2024 16:48

Tree house series

You could try Horrible Histories, or Roald Dahl, or possibly the William books which despite being old fashioned still appeal to some young boys.

Two 7yos obsessed with captain underpants series at the moment - just a little bit rude, which makes them think they are getting away with something. There is also a movie and several tv series, which might provide a hook to get him interested initially.

Following!

We tried allsorts and the ones which appealed the most were the 'create the story' ones. They have a choice of what happens next, so some control, then you can go back and change the scenes. Oh and ones about farts and poo lol 😆

If he can read fairly fluently, I’d suggest Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Tom Gates.

My son really liked the Zoe’s Rescue Zoo series too.

Blueuggboots · 19/09/2024 13:50

My son Love Dav Pilkey's books

Apologies, I never said thank you for all of these great suggestions! We've bought a few of the comic book options and they seem to be going down well, and have ordered a couple of the
Treehouse books to read as well. He hasn't exactly turned into a wildly enthusiastic reader overnight, but I'm enforcing 20 minutes of reading by himself before the TV goes on after school and so far there haven't been too many complaints.
