Hello everyone,

I hope you are well.

My child has been told they have a lucid test in year 7 . Can anyone help me understand what it is please? and if there are any practice or mock tests available for it please?

Thank you in advance.

Are they dyslexic or do they have additional needs? I’ve only heard of this in relation to assessing for SEN requirements.

No , not dyslexic.

In my opinion you should approach this test unprepped as the school use it to identify if additional support is needed such as extra time in exams or use of technology if issues with handwriting, etc. We've always found the process and help provided useful and appropriate. The outcomes can change - so if your child needs help in YR7 you might find they may not need in in later years, the school normally retest in later years.

Speak to the school, as they might have noticed something during lessons and it's good to get tests done if things like lack of focus has been brought up, such a hearing and eye tests.

Is it just your child or the whole year group? It's pretty common for secondary schools now to do whole year group tests like CAT4 or lucid. It gives them a baseline to help plan classes and set targets. No prepping needed.

Thank you.

Yes, the whole year 7.

I only heard of CAT4 assessment, not lucid test. If it's pretty similar it's great, as my child did the 11plus.

Thank you so much

Thank you for your response.

My child only had to go in yesterday , as the school did only year 7s.

The school said this test is for the entire year.

My child also done the 11plus, and got full marks for SATs, so I am a bit confused. He always has been a top student , and even did year 7 studies in year 6 with primary school , as school work was finished quickly for my child.

As the whole school year is doing it, perhaps they want to check everyone or something.

Thank you for your advice and take care.

It's not a test they have to study for or practice.

The school is using it to find out if there are any educational needs such as dyslexia. DSs' school (academically selective so full of "top students" like your DS) used to test the entire year at each point of entry and it usually threw up some dyslexia type needs which were previously not known about.

Thank you so much for explaining.
I really appreciate it

We use it to screen for issues, but also for reading challenge banding. We test again in Y9 to check to see if students have caught up or need additional support through GCSEs.
