GCSE. Is it hopeless to get in to grammar, as we missed the deadline?

I am abroad, my sister is in the UK. She just called me as she has had a sleepless night.
The thing is last Thursday she has learned that her son has got an amazing GCSE results, the grades were so high, they were pleasantly surprised and were very very happy. Immediately they went celebrating, as the dream came true and they were certain that my nephew is going to get a place in the local grammar school.
My sister did not know she had to act very fast and confirm her grammar school application immediately.
Last night she checked her email and there was an email from the school requesting confirmation of the application with a link to a form for submission of their GCSE results. This link was not valid any more and the deadline was Friday.
My sister did not sleep all night after she has found this, called me this morning, she is in distress and we are trying to figure out what can be possibly done now and who to contact. And if this can be resolved at all.
we all are very upset and any advise will be hugely appreciated

Email school straight away.
Phone in case someone is working.
Phone on Tuesday from 8am.
If they say no ask to be put on reserve place.
Have they got s place elsewhere? That will need enrolling in too.

mumonthehill · 26/08/2024 06:44

She will need to call the school tomorrow. She should have a contact name and email from the application process. If she does then email today in the hope they see it tomorrow. I am surprised she was not aware of this as it will have been made clear to them when they applied. She may also want to look at a plan B

She could email them now with the results and)or ring first thing Tuesday morning. The whole of year 11 was scrambling for places on Thursday/Friday for places, confirming conditional offers and sorting out new schools if they didn't get the grades required. How could they miss this?

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 26/08/2024 06:49

When my daughter applied the deadline to accept was something like noon / 2pm same day as results came out. It was made very clear at time of application.

But it may not be end of the world, The one my daughter didn't go to seems to have more issues with staffing than her comp.

She's having a better schooling time where she is.

Bearwithbee · 26/08/2024 06:50

I guess, the answer to your question how she could possibly miss it is because we are not from the UK originally and some things are very new to us. Just an unforgivable mistake and is entirely my sisters fault😞

I understand that, but this is my first time dealing with a year 11 we didn't know the rules either. It was made very clear in the emails and on induction days what was required on results day to confirm your place. It's also on the website

Bearwithbee · 26/08/2024 06:56

I understand it is only our fault. It doesn’t matter now why and how this has happened. It is just one of these things. My sister is in agony and all I am seeking here is an advise of what possibly can be done, thank you very much for your understanding

Some places are not great at communicating.
And if you don't know that you don't know something, then you don't go looking for the answer.

Oopstoo · 26/08/2024 07:08

Our grammar school starts doing offers the day of the deadline - its likely they are currently full - BUT my understanding there is still movement even in the first week of school starting.
Also - its more about is there space in the subjects the child wants to study rather than the actual numbers so worth chatting to the school as might be able to squeeze him in.

Oopstoo · 26/08/2024 07:09

also if you can find the schools exam officers contact details they are likely to be working as helping with exam results so might be able to advise. Send a photo of his results in.

Thank you, Ladies, I am reading all your replies, and I appreciate them very much. There is late submission form is still available, so my sister is doing it now too

Sadly, I think if it's an oversubscribed school, the places may well have all been allocated - the deadline for our grammar school was 4 pm on Thursday, with offers made lunchtime Friday. I don't know whether a late application would be placed in the rightful position in the oversubscription criteria waitlist (i.e. if he's got higher grades than the others on the list, he'll be at the top, and will be offered a place if someone doesn't accept theirs). You might find this information on the school website in the oversubscription criteria information.

Has your sister checked the typical offers for sixth form, for new students joining? The published criteria for existing students moving into sixth form may not be relevant here, as oversubscription criteria (largely based on attainment) apply. So for example, in our sixth form, existing students 'just' need a 7 point average over their top 10 subjects to get in (plus subject requirements). Once those spaces are allocated, applications from new students are ranked in attainment order and offers made accordingly. The new students joining typically have straight 9s. (I'm not saying this to sound sneery, but it might be a comfort to her (it would to me) to discover he would not have got in, even if on time!). NB. Info above is for an oversubscribed super-selective grammar, so might not be applicable to your sister's situation.

As well as contacting the new school as soon as it opens on Tuesday, the priority should be securing his other options, just in case.

Thank you, he has got 7s and 8s and also due to them living very close to the grammar school he does get priority (still needed to get certain amount of points, which he did)
Their school is very popular and is oversubscribed. Our situation is every parent nightmare

Try to be hopeful - our grammar school 6th form was oversubscribed (I think maybe 1,000 kids applied for 230 places?) and I was the parent rep helping new parents - our school only offers a certain number of kids to upload their details and when there is movement its only these kids which are offered the places when they come free. Offers are done on distance to school.

I promise you its very likely there will still be movement - I was surprised that this happens but it does. There are kids sitting on a few offers and they upload their details to a few schools and then choose one. I have heard that at time these kids don't tell the other schools they no longer need the place and its only discovered to be free when they don't show up in the first week - selfish but true!

stealthninjamum · 26/08/2024 07:49

All she can do is try. I’m in a parents WhatsApp group and I can see lots of people holding places at two grammar schools while they decide which ones they want. She might be lucky - especially if he wants to do one of the least popular courses. My daughter has accepted a grammar offer but we’re doing a last minute call of private schools because we’re not entirely sure it’s the right a level subjects for her.

Thank you so much, this is very comforting to read. I just screen shot it and forward it to my poor sister. We shall remain hopeful

Ah, so distance is the tie-breaker. It sounds then like he would be next in line if he gets put in his 'rightful' place in the waitlist. Hopefully then there will be enough movement over the next week or so. Fingers crossed!

RootToVictory · 26/08/2024 08:07

Your poor sister, I really feel for her. She should email today and try calling (unlikely anyone will be there) then call again tomorrow. Hope it works out.

Ladies, I am here with an update, my nephew has been accepted in to grammar school!! To those of you who were kind, your words of support were very comforting. Thank you so much for helping me to keep my hope up
