Considering a history degree, applied during clearing.

I'm 26, sahm so don't need to make a wage right now but would like to have a career and education, this would be my first degree.

Really unsure of where it would lead me so any advice welcome! Want to make the right decision for me and my family! Thanks in advance

DD has a History degree and works in tech. Her course mates work in various roles including tv production, PR and the civil service. Only one works in a role directly linked to her degree. It seems to be well regarded by employers

@mummyofrb

Which subjects did you study at A Level, OP?

mummyofrb · 19/08/2024 17:10

@TheSquareMile I actually have a diploma in childcare so it's a big change!

Congratulations on your decision!
I'm a history graduate and went into broadcast journalism. But that was 35 years ago! And I no longer do that.
I think it's an excellent analytical and interpretative degree.
It makes you great at pub quizzes too.
Go for it!

I joined a grad scheme for chartered accountancy and worked in finance/ asset management and investor relations. Then worked in philanthropy. However, my caveat is that I didn’t get picked up by the grad scheme for having a history degree ( they were subject agnostic) but for the university that I attended. In terms of employability, overall university reputation matters a huge amount for history, unlike something like engineering where they are more interested in the quality of that specific course than the overall reputation of the university.

Have you had any thoughts about what you would like to apply for after your degree, OP?

mummyofrb · 19/08/2024 18:23

@TheSquareMile no idea! Just feel stuck in a rut jobwise childcare awfully paid and not really respected! I have always had interest in history so that's what I've followed with it really, I didn't expect to be offered a place at all!

@nationaltreasureDA how did your daughter get into tech after doing a History degree?

MujeresLibres · 25/08/2024 19:15

I have a history degree and I'm in tech. I did a masters postgraduate conversion course after my first degree.
