The Oaklands Primary School and Olton comments

Hi Mums, I have searched Mumsnet and have yet to see any comments on The Oaklands Primary School. Is there anyone who can share comments/experiences/thoughts on this school? We are about to move to Birmingham with a 5-year-old. I will be working at BWC Hospital. AIBU to rent a place so far from work? Do you think this school or area is worth it? Living in a family-friendly area and having good schools nearby are my priorities. But I am a total stranger to this city. Can you please help me??

@nakipos

I don't know the school myself, OP, but have had a quick look at its reports on the OFSTED site.

Unfortunately, the most recent report seems to be some 6 years ago.

Hopefully another poster will know more about the school as it is now.

Which of the hospitals will you be working at?

I couldn't think out looking the last inspection date. Thank you for pointing out. I will be at Birmingham children's. Do you have any suggestion for a place nearby?

I have replied to your other thread in Primary Education:

The distance from work is not the major factor - it's the convenience of the travel. If you can easily commute to your place of work, it's fine. It's worth checking out the commute in rush hour etc.

Your child will be moving into Year 1 - have you checked that the school has a place in Y1 from September for your child?

Thank you for response. I had no idea how hard to find a place to live and a school for your kid especially moving from whole other country.
You see this will be ours first time in the UK. So ı am still trying to get familiar with the education system. As far as ı can understand the application has already been ended on Jan 15,2024. I can only make a request for an in-year admission to the local council. So please correct me if I am mistaken. And there is this waiting list issue. Does it help us to be accepted to a school if we speak before we get there?

@nakipos

I've just had a look to see where Birmingham Children's Hospital is - it's in Steelhouse Lane, not far from Aston University.

Although I occasionally visit Birmingham, I wasn't quite sure where the Children's Hospital was.

Does the recruitment team at the hospital advise on accommodation for staff who are new to the hospital, OP?

Will you need to take things into account such as working shifts and needing to come to and from the hospital late at night or early in the morning?

I was just looking at this as a possibility for you, but would advise asking the recruitment team about it to confirm that it's something bona fide.

This is the bus map on the Bham Children's Hospital website, if that helps.
