Following on from another thread from a Reception teacher, thought I’d start with the other end of school. If you’ve any questions about your child going into their final year at Primary, or the imminent move to Secondary, please just ask 😁

That absolutely varies from School to School. Our children go to a variety of High Schools (5 different ones this year), some schools let them pick one person they want to be with, all ask us for clashes, one school doesn’t ask at all.

Why do you think that that school doesn't bother to ask at all? Why wouldn't they want to avoid clashes etc?

Do the secondary schools rely only on the Sats to stream the kids or do they ask you for any mitigating circumstances?

Do schools get told a students individual marks for each SATS paper (eg the mark for each of the maths papers)?

Yes, we get a raw score for each paper (the actual number of marks) and then these are all calculated into scaled scores, which decide the levels.

I'm not sure why so many people confidently state that sats make no impact on secondary as they do their own assessments. This isn't true of my son's secondary or other schools in my area.

My son is just finishing year 7. First off the top 1/3 sats achieving children get streamed off in to their own 'small school'. Children do not get moved from their allocated 'small school' for their entire secondary education.

They are then further streamed in English, maths and science. From day 1 in their form, solely based on sats results. He gets targets set for assessments in all subjects. These too are solely based on sats results.

My friends have children in different secondary schools that do this also. So they may well make a difference.

I'm sure not all schools do this. But there is so much misinformation given regarding this in so many threads. Parents need to check what their chosen schools do.

Because I am a teacher and it is an absolute fact.
I qualified in secondary and worked there for several years before moving to primary.

Do you have favourites, and do you favour kids whose parents volunteer loads? Honestly?

Absolutely honest - no, I don’t have favourites at all. You always get children that you perhaps warm too more, but that doesn’t mean it’s the more confident or higher ability ones, it can be just something that resonates with you more and there are children I remember more than others. I don’t favour children whose parents volunteer more, absolutely not. Lots of children’s parents can’t or don’t want to volunteer, totally get that and that’s not the child’s fault.

My son really resented the SATS and stubbornly decided not to try hard 🙈
As a result his reading score is in no way a reflection of his true ability.
Should I tell the new school?

If it’s the same as our area, his teacher will also give their own assessments to the school as well, so please don’t worry about that.

Our local secondary sets initially based on SATS. But you can move up or down quite easily. Not sure why teachers are insisting that it doesn't happen.

I’ve no idea why they don’t ask, always seems strange to me 🤷‍♀️

Most of the High Schools don’t stream in Year 7 in our Authority, but they ask for information on ability etc and we would always pass on any information that we considered important.

Does the stench of years 6ers armpits make you vom all summer?
Why are they so stinky!!!!

wonderings2 · 18/07/2024 13:10

Can I be cheeky and ask as a parent of a younger child.

Aside from natural ability what really sets up a child well in schooling and for academic achievement's later in life?
Can you see children in youngers years and predict how well they'll do later?
Can parents do anything other than the normal making them do their homework, reading etc?
Do extra curricular actives make a difference?

Sorry that was lots of questions...

Welcome to the world of puberty. To be honest, it’s not too bad really, but on PE days, or when it’s been curry for lunch, it can be a bit 🤢🤢

You can't say with such authority that it is an absolute fact! That's a ridiculous statement 🤣🤣

My son was streamed using SAT's and I know that is fact because we were told so and informed of the streamed groups they were put in before they started at the school.

Unless they can do their own assessment remotely before the kids have even started at the school, without the knowledge of pupils or parents? 🤷

Do you think the national curriculum in its current iteration sets children/young people up for the real world? Were you in teaching prior to 2014 before Gove messed with it? If so how do you feel about the changes?

curlycurlymoo · 18/07/2024 17:15

@OneTaupeMentor thank you! That's put my mind at ease.
