Private School Fees plus VAT

I am looking at schools for DC to start next year. I have read some articles that said parents were getting ahead of this rise by pre paying for numerous years in advance. Obviously we can’t do this yet because DC hasn’t started yet.

I’m curious has anybody who has children at private school been told what to expect yet? Will fees go up 20% or will they “half it” with parents and only go up 10% etc?

This increase is something we need to factor into account when exploring schools.

Also this is not a thread for you to bash private schools and write things such as “choose state school instead like the rest of us”... if those are your opinions then please find a different thread instead. I purely want to know if any parents have received communication regarding a fee increase yet? Thank you

So eloquent 😐

You think the other poster is the one that lacks eloquence 😂

See above. Next you'll be telling me that nobody needs to eat pot noodles. Just because you can't see the need for something, doesn't mean it's not useful.

With VAT
on the noodles

It's not a loophole. The people who came up with the exemption on education intended to ensure that education wasn't taxed. Our government are going to be the odd one's out. Almost no government in the world taxes education. It's the absolute, rock bottom, very least that a government can do to ensure that education can thrive. It's just bizarre to refer to it as a 'loophole'.

Education is extremely expensive and not at all profitable (except, possibly, for the tutoring businesses springing up everywhere). There's a profit to be made in running old folks' homes or nursery chains. Tesco is making an absolute killing selling non VATable goods. Why do you think there's no Tesco run schools? Because it's expensive. You need to attract and train graduates to work long hours. You can't run schools paying minimum wages. Most schools are breaking even.

You don't care that small (often ideological) schools are going to close while the schools for the rich thrive, and you think somebody else is being a bitch?

At least understand the full picture and facts of what you believe in.
This isn't a tax loophole, that was just Labour spin. In order for it to be a loophole then existing VAT must apply, it doesn't. Education is currently not taxed. Education across the whole of Europe (and most of the world) isn't taxed. Greece tried, and failed.

Same to you. There is no blanket exemption for education. Tutors are subject to VAT depending on how they are employed, for example. The government website lays out the rules. The new rules are potentially implying that (perhaps some) private schools are businesses, and not charities or non profits.

The rules can't potentially imply anything. They have to include non-profits or exclude them from the VAT.

🙄there is nothing worse than someone who has just googled something, thinks they understand it, and is now an expert.

Rules can't imply anything. In any case, legislation hasn't yet been written so you can't claim that it has. You really haven't researched this policy that you believe so strongly in.
Under EU law yes education is exempt. This would be the first deviation from primary legislation since we left the EU.
The fact remains that across the world, most education isn't taxed. There's a very good reason for that ie ethical and moral beliefs that education, no matter what format, is beneficial to the whole of society.

why are you loving it? If you are honest with yourself, it’s jealousy isn’t it?

Brighton2025 · 14/08/2024 11:16

Passay · 26/07/2024 21:52

Yup. No one needs to go to a fee paying school.

you sound very jealous.

If you can’t afford it don’t go

LOVING the tax thing 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻

Passay · 14/08/2024 13:50

Not at all. I went to one.

I see..... so is it you want your children to go to a private school?

Passay · 14/08/2024 21:35

No. I don’t know why this requires an interrogation of my educational choices.

All of my children went to state schools two of them were offered several scholarships at different private schools but thankfully they didn’t want to go. I just think private education is inequitable.

I'm not asking why you applied for scholarships then... :)

Brighton2025 · 15/08/2024 07:22

@Ubertomusic. Exactly. It seems strange doesn't it?
@Passay this is not an interrogation. More of an interest into how one can be so bitter and rejoice in a situation that can potentially negatively impact many children.
I'm also interested in how you think taxing private schools will improve the current situation?

Passay · 15/08/2024 07:58

Oh for God sake we didn’t apply for scholarships. They’re just amazingly amazing and we’re offered places at private schools.

now why don’t you just worry about your own children and the fact you can’t afford to pay for their education?

Brighton2025 · 15/08/2024 08:14

I think the 'amazingly amazing' comment sums you up. (And also made me giggle)
I'm in the position to be able to comfortably pay for my daughter's private education (sorry to disappoint you) I am just not a member of society that rejoices in other's misery nor takes delight in the fact that there are hardworking parents that go without to provide the very best for their children and will potentially have to remove their children from their schools.

Brighton2025 · 15/08/2024 08:16

And one more thing. Your amazingly amazing children were offered scholarships, but you denied them this opportunity. Now isn't that a very 'cut your nose (or their noses) off to spite the face attitude? Interesting mindset.

Except you have to physically apply for scholarships and your kids have to sit assessments for them......

Not if you play elite sport

Funny because DDs school offers sports scholarships and has several alumni who played for England, every child still has to sit the entrance exam and then a sports assessment. I know every independent school is different but still.......

Brighton2025 · 15/08/2024 08:35

@twistyizzy not if you are amazing apparently Wink
