Where do all of your girls get their back backs? DD needs one for Y 7 and I'm not even sure where to look! It has to be a backpack (no totes etc).

I think I'm going to go for this?

Are any of these Marks and Spencer ones suitable, OP?

Definitely not for secondary!

Comefromaway · 25/07/2024 14:52

Dd likes colourful ones. She usually chose something from Sports direct

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 25/07/2024 15:06

Round here the girls all have those massive tote type bags that look like suitcases. The boys have rucksacks of any brand or description and I don't think there's any fashion for certain ones.

mm81736 · 25/07/2024 15:29

My kids school doesn't allow branded goods, so maybe double check that.

mm81736 · 25/07/2024 15:31

Also my kids went to avgrammar school with a lot of pretty posh kids and brands were regarded as challenging.

Try TK Maxx

Chocolatecakewithsprinkles · 25/07/2024 18:56

Black backpacks for my two boys in high school the girls seem to use large tote style handbags.

StainlessSeal · 25/07/2024 20:42

Yep, they're not allowed totes; must be a rucksack

One of mine has a 'pinnacle', the other has an 'out of Office' I think!

There will be lots of Nike and adidas and similar brands. One or two more hiking type ones from Mountain Warehouse etc. There’s often a lot of kids with exact same pack. A few kids switched away from the most ubiquitous one mid our DC’s yr8 because they kept picking up each others bags by mistake.

You might need 2, in DCs secondary most had a separate backpack for sports kit. Ours was a Slazenger, black with a red zip. Easy to tell apart in a sea of Adidas.

A lot of the younger women at my work are using a particular type than folds over at the top and I saw some in tk maxx. Let me see if I can find a picture of what they look like. They are pretty nice.

BashfulClam · 12/08/2024 10:32

I’ve seen nice colours but they all seem to like these. These are the younger staff 18-24.

Would Abercrombie be seen as lame? My daughter is going into year 7- she would continue to wear her smiggle sparkly butterfly into her 70s but trying to find her something girly but sturdy. Leo considered a fjallraven (horribly expensive but trying to find a sale!), Eastpak, jansport as I know they last for ages and she can dress them up with patches. She doesn’t care what others think but I don’t want people to think I’ve neglected her 😆

Fjallraven. Expensive but was used a few years at school and now for uni and work. It is always very heavy and goes on and on.

I got one as a nappy back 12 years ago nd it’s still going strong!

DinnaeFashYersel · 16/08/2024 10:16

We buy sports rucksacks to ensure they are both big enough and with good support.

They need to be big enough to carry chromebook, school books, PE kit and sometimes packed lunch.

It's a bit of a risk because of the race scandal and the more recent sexual exploitation. There could be an issue I think as some teenagers seem to be looking for things to be offended by.

Your dd will probably be able to use her smiggle bag again in year ten. They do seem to settle in to being more able to wear what they want when they are older.

My dd had a £40 bag in year seven then a kanken which was £80 but the kanken is still going strong whereas the £40 one was a write off.

You will always be able to get a kanken somewhere for under £80. They are often reduced. They are practical, sensible and well made bags.

I've noticed when taking my boys to school that while they've all got their Nike black backpacks etc, the girls schools seemed to have different types so it might be worth finding out from an older student which ones are in vogue at that particular school.

OneHeartyCat · 16/08/2024 14:29

Thank you- just got her a pink fjallraven as she loves pink and you have confirmed my initial thoughts xx

FoxInABox · 26/08/2024 20:43

My DD is going in to year 10 and has picked a black Jansport one this year. I got it from Amazon, they’re currently £20 on prime but delivery is a bit delayed so wouldn’t come in time for school. They seem to be quite popular at the moment.
Previously she had a Fjäll Räven Kånken which was silly money.

FlappingMadly · 26/08/2024 20:45

Cabaia is all the rage here.

My DD had a plain black Jansport bag for starting secondary, and after 18 months it had a hole in the bottom and straps falling off because of all of the weight that it had carried. Yet I’d thought Jansport was fairly indestructible. I’d hoped that bag would last the whole of secondary.

Now moved on to Nike and if this one breaks, at least it didn’t cost as much to buy.

My DC use the large JanSport bags and we've found them good.
They have a 30 year warranty so you should be able to get your bag repaired or replaced if you still have the receipt.
