How common is no uniform in the UK? I’d have thought quite rare.

I always had to wear a uniform - at various times a straw hat, a tie, a blazer, ‘regulation’ tights and underwear in a specific colour.

It was at least very easy to get dressed in the morning.

We had optional uniform at primary in late 80's/early 90s, maybe about 20% wore uniform

Not sure there are many non uniform schools left in the UK. I was born in the 60's.

Infant School was non uniform.

Primary School - the vast majority wore a uniform of sorts but it wasn't an official uniform, it was left up to parents to decide their own version of what a uniform should look like. There was a yellow and blue school tie you could buy which my brother wore. I didn't have a tie but I was co-ordinated - my grandma knitted me a jumper with a yellow stripe on the v neck.

Secondary School was a Grammar with a very strict uniform - even down to the colour of our knickers.

It's fairly common in parts of Scotland to have no or relaxed uniform. Interestingly Glasgow state secondary's all seem to have blazers and 'proper' uniforms. In Edinburgh blazers are usually the independent schools whilst the state schools have a logo sweatshirt or nothing.

Three different primaries with no uniform, secondary quite a strict uniform, VI for a slightly more relaxed uniform.

Secondary we had a 'summer uniform' worn from Easter until the September holidays. They had got rid of the hats before I got there.

When my parents were at school only the grammars had uniforms, I don't know if that was everywhere or just where they lived.

Uniform from juniors upwards except 6th form. 70s/80s RC schools, and secondary was girls only.

All the local secondary schools back then had uniforms, not all the primary schools.

I wore uniform at first, middle and high school (state, not UK)

Our kids go to a UK state primary and just have to wear a school T-shirt or sweatshirt, the bottom half is whatever you are comfortable in. They will go to a non-uniform secondary next year.

Both. Primary, non. Two secondaries, one with one without. The one without basically had an unofficial uniform and if you didn't wear it you got battered, lol. So Levis 501s, a ysl shirt, Reebok classics and gold hoops. I came in on the first day wearing a vintage fur coat and platforms. Lol.

Optional uniform for junior school, which obviously my parents made me wear, complete with cardigans hand-knitted by my mum. No one cared one way or the other though so it wasn't an issue. Strangely, the infant school that we all went to on the same site had mandatory uniform. We did PE in our vests and knickers there though!

Mandatory uniform up until VIth Form everywhere else.

Primary (1960s): no uniform
Secondary (1970s): uniform, except in 6th form which had a dress code (eg no jeans allowed).

Doublethecuddles · 14/07/2024 16:14

When everyone had a handknitted cardigan or jumper, it was so much easier to find yours! Branded sweatshirts can be a nightmare, particularly when parents cut out the name tags!

Both.

Primary, non uniform. She bought random school uniform items, but not all of them, so I looked like a scruffy but overdressed kid from another school who had wandered in off the street for photos.

Secondary, uniform. If something was compulsory, she deliberately bought something that was wrong and if it were optional/could be from anywhere/any type, she bought the official uniform version. Bloody Banner school shirts (2 per week) and nylon jumper (1), together with sodding pink trainers and the wrong colour skirt (1).
