Brain Gym

ok please could all the teachers/knowledgable people explain Brain Gym to me. My DC do it at scchool and I see it several times each day. So Brain Gym involves rubbing your brain buttons, then swinging your arms around for a minute (doing front and back cross overs) then standing still for 1 minute. So I would like to know what are the benefits and where are the brain buttons?

Thanks

Ooh yes please - I want to know where my brain buttons are. I bet I could have been doing Great Things all these years had I just been rubbing my brain buttons and swinging my arms round

www.braingym.org.uk/

basically a set of exercises that have been claimed to improve learning but do focus children.

It's complete nonsense isn't it? There's a good article about it here:

science it isn't but it has it's uses

UnquietDad · 11/04/2008 14:49

It sounds like bollocks to me.

Swedes · 11/04/2008 14:56

This was on Newsnight last week. It has no scientific basis whatsoever. Tax payers' money being spent on absolute nonsense.

Why don't they just do some bending and stretching exercises before lessons start - like the Chinese?

PrimulaVeris · 11/04/2008 14:57

Total unproven bollocks without a shred of scientific evidence to support it, to be precise.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 11/04/2008 14:58

The Bad Science stuff on this is brilliant.

mrz · 11/04/2008 15:01

Swedes it serves a similar purpose just some education authorities have gone overboard.

barnstaple · 11/04/2008 15:01

This is absolutely brilliant! LOL, fantastic bad science, utterly wonderful.

They don't do it at dd's school, but I do think giving them short exercise breaks isn't a bad idea. Maybe I should recommend Brain Gym to the Head?!

barnstaple · 11/04/2008 15:02

And I love the crap about the processing liquids - that's been around for years, and always makes me laugh.

BetteNoir · 11/04/2008 15:04

DS used to do it.
He was given the exercises by his NHS OT.
He is dyspraxic and dyslexic, and exercises that cross the midline help to improve co-ordination.
He now does Wing Chun, and does similar exercises there.
His balance and co-ordination have improved.
But Brain Gym is v. expensive, and the exercises can be carried out cheaply using other methods.

AbbeyA · 11/04/2008 21:27

I think that it is excellent-very good for coordination. I don't know if we are talking about the same thing BetteNoir-it just needs the exercises and some music-not expensive at all.

it's great for breaking up a lessons, getting the kids to stand up and stretch arms/legs etc etc
