Advocacy for parents - is it needed?

Hi all

this is quite random so stay with me….

I have worked for 14 years in education starting as a teacher. I am currently employed an assistant headteacher and oversee safeguarding, behaviour, pastoral support. I am also the schools senior mental health lead and designated teacher for looked after children. I am currently on maternity leave and due to the nature of my job and child care issues it is unlikely I will be returning to work.

However I enjoy my role in school and I feel that over the years I have accumulated a lot of ‘inside’ knowledge that parents are often not aware of, specifically with regards to their child’s rights, what can and can’t be expected of schools, suspensions, permanent exclusions etc. I would really like to help parents who need support with raising an issue with school, kind of like an advocate. This is something I would do for free to just keep my brain going whilst I am not working! I also feel that often parents who have not been successful in education themselves are judged and not treated fairly by the school.

do you think this would be a service that would be needed? I have helped friends and family with issues but obviously not strangers. Has anyone been in the position where the support and advice from someone who knows the system so to speak would be valuable?

I definitely would, what a great idea. I have taken private educational psychologists into meetings before in desperation!

I would, yes. My daughter was subject to a series of incidents where the school failed to and outright refused to safeguard her safety. The only way to protect her was to de register her.

It was an horrendously traumatic situation and I would have loved to have the support of an advocate with the 'inside track' as it were
