Free breakfast club for all primary school kids

So the Labour government is planning to offer free breakfast clubs for all children at all state schools regardless of area.

Given that these are often run independently from schools themselves, if you have a state school in very close proximity to a private school, should private school parents be allowed to use this service, and if not, why not?

So if the teachers aren't paid why do they do it? And if people other than teachers do it, who employs them such that ratios aren't required...

Some will be guilt tripped into it, others will just go along with being told that they should be doing it and know no better, some will fear the negative comeback from bad management and others will do it to suck up to the management.

And lets not forget those that will do it "for the kids"

Because they care….. simply that….

All private schools don't seem to offer the wraparound element for free, so it adds to the cost if you do 7.30am for some it seems...

The particular case I'm thinking of the schools are opposite each other on the same road

If your private school decides to offer it, are you up for all the kids from the state school taking up the places in breakfast/ after-school club? No? Same logic. The places will be for pupils

HurrahWuff · 13/07/2024 11:30

Can't see that happening... state kids get free meals to a certain age, private have always had to pay. (Here anyway)

SLT may end up having to be in there to cover absences-they aren’t subject to the normal teaching directed hours.

When you opt out of the state school system you opt out of everything. You carnt pick and choose the parts that suit you.

I'm a normal, main scale class teacher. We don't always have SLT on site as a small school. As with many things, if a class teacher didn't step in to cover we would have to cancel the wrap around care at short notice.

This seems mad in 2024 but our village school has no wraparound care of any form, and so is 60% full. Beautiful school, but it is dying because either one parent can't work or you have family care (we don't) or you have one of six places with the village childminder.

They are introducing an afternoon provider from Sept because of the changing policy. If they hadn't, we would have had to leave. We can't pay our mortgage on 9-3.30pm.

Schools here don't offer it. Would save a fortune in before school care.

My son's school had a breakfast club but has never had an after-school club due to opposition from the local childminders. I had to pay for the breakfast club though.

@JennyForeigner

Totally get it. We moved to an area with some provision and then had to appeal to get a school place that had a (privately run) after school club (we didn't appeal on that basis but it was the reason we didn't stay with the school). Before then we used taxis to shuttle my 5-8year old from school to an after school club. The straw that broke the camel's back was when they took DS1 to the wrong club.

staringatthedoor · 31/07/2024 06:40

Take it you don't work then.
Breakfast club is called such (my kids school actually calls it something else & don't even have breakfast) as it is early before school. So I can get to work & do a full day. Then they go to after school club few times a week. So I can go to work. Not too chuffed about being called lazy when i can barely find time breath.

MrsSunshine2b · 27/08/2024 21:24

I don't agree with the VAT on fees, but this is a silly suggestion. Breakfast club will be part of the school offer. If you don't go to the school then you can't access it.

Horserider5678 · 11/01/2025 09:13

Added to which the rubbish state schools serve up compared to what is on offer in private schools why would they?

AndSoFinally · 14/01/2025 17:11

Did free breakfast club for all actually materialise under the new Labour government? I haven't seen anything about it but we are in Wales so had this already
