School holiday fine

Hi just wondering if anyone can help, I recently took my sons out of school for 6 school days to go to a caravan holiday (1st holiday in years) both have been given fines. They attend different schools one primary one high school, they’re attendance is good.
My issue however is two other mums who go to my sons primary school took there children out exactly the same amount of time and have worse attendance but they received a warning letter rather than a fine? This has baffled me and I don’t understand how the work it out?

Having a 14 year old at school, i was fined last year for taking him out for the last 4 days in july. Did i pay it? did i fcuk!!! you know why, hes MY son, not the governments, i cannot afford to pay full holiday prices and what was he really going to learn new in the last few days of the school year?! I told them i will not be complying with there draconian rules. Their not bothered about the kids, their only bothered about figures and control. Do we know where this money will be going to? would they let us have a say in what our kids are being taught, i dont think so! And all this i put in a letter to the school and council and have not heard back about with regards to my fine, this was last September and i will be doing the same this year to.

If we all go with it and keep our mouths shut its more control over us and they will push it more and more to see how far we will go till there is nothing we can do that makes us happy.

If you valued your education, you would know the difference between they’re, there and their. And maybe you’d have a job which paid you enough. Now sadly you’ve passed on your attitude to your kid. This is why generations continue in poverty.

@Mrcpy You’ve absolutely nailed it.

Emmav2020 · 17/07/2024 18:39

@Mrcpy thank you for pointing that out. School also noticed that AFTER I told them I think I'm dyslexic as a teen and was then diagnosed. If I hadn't of realised I was school would have carried on with my struggling.
My son does very well at school thanks.
Also I do well as a chartered accountant abd his dad, as an owner of a haulage company. Bare in mind we left with no GSCE's.
FYI most millionaires/billionaires didn't complete school.
Also if you value your children's education read about the proposition AB 1955, that's just been passed in america and will be here soon.

Mrcpy · 17/07/2024 18:46

You’re a chartered accountant with no GCSEs?

Anyway, we’re going off topic here.

My point is that missing school for holidays is a line that we, personally, would not cross. Holidays are optional luxuries. If we can’t afford a holiday outside of term dates, then we don’t take one. Demonstrating a respect for schools and education is much more important. Also, I don’t want my kids to grow into adults who pull sickies at work. They’re similar concepts IMO.

Cool story. Whilst complaining that you can't afford to pay full holiday prices? It is 'bear in mind' by the way. You can see why people doubt you are a CA...

Well this isn't adding up. 😂😂😂

I am a teacher and I am ok with children taking term time holidays. However, when I took my children out when I was on may leave I got a fine. I appealed it and won. My children's report showed they were working at and above expectations so I argued that it had not affected their education.

This has made me think I should appeal as DS' report showed him about the standard so the missing week hasn't disadvantaged him at all

RockyRogue1001 · 17/07/2024 19:28

I'm ignoring the recent derail, because I think it misses the point, and I'm not sure how genuine the poster is, but do also think that their grasp of SPAG (dyslexic or not) rather proves the opposite of the point they're trying to make.
Nuff said.

@Manda86 and anyone else who is a fan of term time holidays...
New laws kick in over the summer.
From September both parents can be fined for each child
And for a 2nd holiday in a rolling 3 yr period, the fine doubles (per child per parent)
And if you take a third holiday (3 yr rolling)....

Emmav2020 · 17/07/2024 19:29

@Mrcpy @Hatty65 @wutheringkites Like i said i left school with no GCSE's. but it doesnt mean i didnt go to college when i was in my 20's to get my GCSE's and passed. Then studied AAT and completed my exams in accountancy.

Also I have to pay high travel insurance as my daughter has a heart conduction and sometime can be just as expensive as a holiday, so yes thats why i take my son out if not we certainly wouldnt be able to afford it in school holiday when holiday sky rocket and also insurance.

So before commenting, school didnt help with my GCSE's, I learnt to pass them on my own. Also people cant always afford to go in school holiday because they have extra things to pay for that people like you wouldnt know about.

Emmav2020 · 17/07/2024 19:35

Also taking children out of school is not Law, its an Act. You have to abide by the law but not an Act.

To answer some questions above:

-my sons attendances are 93% one is 94%,
-we both went on holiday exactly the same time. So all children had same amount of days off.
-the fine come through 4 weeks after we come back.
-my sons have just had reports and mock GCSE results and achieving above average.
-we went on a caravan holiday to see our newest member of the family who lives bottom of the country. (Though that is irrelevant)
-also I don’t want to have to lie, I appreciate that there is a fine in place and I have to pay it, the issue is why aren’t other parents the same? Surely fines aren’t issued out of a hat or a random generator? There should be a policy and certain criteria if you hit that you get a fine. Simple! I’ve paid the fines but I just wanted more information

That's still quite low though isn't it? My son is at 99% attendance finishing this year. I know the school targets 96%.

Also taking children out of school is not Law, its an Act. You have to abide by the law but not an Act.

This makes no sense whatsoever. Are you somehow claiming you are not legally obliged to pay this fine?!

What happens with other families is nothing to do with you - your only concern is your own family, and your own fine. Did you get fined per day? or just fined once per child?

Emmav2020 · 17/07/2024 20:04

@Pythag exactly what I'm saying. Some council don't fine and never have done. If it was law every council in the country would have to pay a fine. The Council next to me don't fine anyone who takes their kids out in term time.
If your going to be fined because you have taken 5 consecutive days out of school just book a holiday when the teacher training or inset days falls and you only have to take them out for 4 school days.
