College out of area

My 17 year old daughter has not been coping well since the death of my husband, her father less than a year ago. She dragged herself through a college course last year and now wishes to start a course near her sister, in IOW. We were supposed to be moving there as we are currently in London. But the move was put off due to the death. She would still be living with me but staying at her sisters three days a week to attend the college until we sort the move again. Is this OK? Can you attend any college? It is the only way to protect her mental health as I fear she would not cope without the constant contact from her sister and if she were forced to attend her previous college which was not a good environment.

I don't see why not in theory.

However your 3 days a week might not be long enough dependent on the course timetable. Even a 3 day a week course may not be consecutive days, and the travel (train to soton then ferry?) may be too early a start.

Best thing us to get on the phone asap to admissions. College terms finish very soon (eg this week) so decision makers may not be around if there are grey areas to be decided upon.

(I wonder whether there would be any advantage in saying living with sister and visiting you, rather than vice versa?)

@Sheshell

Which particular course would she be interested in, OP?

Sheshell · 28/06/2024 10:45

Her course is considered full time, with independent work filling the rest of the week. It is an art course and we both feel her permanent place is here. We both could not bear to lose another person.

@Sheshell

I think that the best thing would be to apply for the course today, OP.

I'm assuming that she would like to begin this September, so time is of the essence.

The Admissions Tutor for the course will be your best port of call, as he/she will decide whether she can be accepted.

This course might be suitable.

The one thing I would add relates to your comment in your last post about potentially losing another person. I'm assuming that support is in place for your daughter at the moment and that similar support would be available on the Isle of Wight.

The college in IOW know she lives here and because of the mental health issues they are supportive. It would also mean if I can get the move going again, it does not disrupt her.

I'd get it all firmed up ASAP then.

When will she know that she has been accepted for the course?

Sheshell · 28/06/2024 11:16

Thanks, The Square Mile for the link but she already attendeded open day this week and she can start at level 3 on the course you suggest. She is very talented. She put in an official application yesterday with full disclosure of the situation

Sounds like it is good to go. Have they said the days of the week? Will she have to continually transport art folders up and down?

Sheshell · 28/06/2024 11:23

We go via Portsmouth ferry and then she would be picked up by car, so no worries about folders of work. The college is interviewing in August. Sounds like we are following all the right steps then? Thanks everyone for the replies.

Is it interviewing or enrolling?

My DD is returning to college in Sept and is being enrolled in July as she already has relevant results so doesn't need to wait for gcse results.

@Sheshell

If she needs to buy any materials for her work, I would recommend this shop.

I went in there at Christmas to buy some gifts. They do stamp cards which mean that you get money off when your card is full and also discounts for students doing art (I think).
