Is there a league table that compares state and independent schools for GCSE results?

We are beginning to question the value of private education (other than for the sport etc). We are moving 1 child to state sector from private to avoid VAT.

Is there a league table somewhere that compares state and independent? For A levels and / or GCSEs please?

Thankyou

In my local area all of the private schools even the non-selective ones out-perform even the ofsted outstanding state secondaries, apart from the state Grammar which has the best results.

You can compare yourself by looking at gcse results for your local schools.

@happypeter that list is totally out of whack due to listing by progress 8.
which is not an appropriate measure for most private schools.
JAGS 136 and FH 223 and zero mention of WA makes the site laughable not to mention a few other top private schools not even mentioned or on the map.
I would certainly not be recommending that link.

Don’t move your child. State is awful. It’s not just about grades. The entire experience in city state schools is brutal.

What a stupid, prejudiced thing to say. You have no idea where the OP lives or what their local state options are like.

@MrPickles73 Although the national league tables will allow you to compare state and private schools by 'Attainment 8' you won't be able to compare them by 'Progress 8', which is the better key measure for non-selective schools. Progress 8 is a measure of progress between key stage 2 (SATs results) and key stage 4 (GCSE results), but private primary schools don't do SATs so private secondaries aren't measured by P8.

I would recommend that you look up your local secondary options on the Government's Compare Schools site and look to see if their P8 is described as 'Well Above Average', 'Above Average', 'Average', etc. You can also rank them by P8 against each other.

If your child is generally a high attainer you can filter the results to find P8 for children who were high attainers at key stage 2. Same for middle and low attainers.

All state schools?

Have you visited every single state school in the UK?

What an ignorant remark Hmm

Lots of things to consider (as other posters have said). You can’t compare a selective and non selective intake, independent schools may do iGCSEs etc. But what I have only found out for sure now that I have a DD in that year is that some private schools will not let the kids sit the GCSE if they don’t think they’ll get a grade 6. (My DD is at a selective private school that you will see in the league tables. She knows several kids who aren’t being allowed to sit the exam in certain subjects after their mock results - and one whose parents have withdrawn her from a subject because they don’t think she’ll get an 8 or 9.). So I would take any of these tables with a huge pinch of salt…..
