Should overt display of religious symbolism be banned in schools?

There have been a couple of cases of girls in my daughter's school being prevented from wearing jewelry that includes a crucifix. The school argue this is simply jewelry but the girls have articulated it is symbolic of their faith and is a public symbol of devotion. The girls eventually agreed to not wear the jewelry.

However is the an argument to enhance exclusivity and ensure consistency and fairness of uniform policy that all symbols of religious nature are simply banned? Is there a need to proclaim your religion publically at school (especially a secular one); can't it be left until after school?

I am looking at France and the policy of not being able to wear clothing or items of religious significance does seem to work at a school level. Should we consider the same?
