To have though of a fairer way to fund state education than VAT on private?

State schools are in desperate need of funding.

Money needs raising.

Instead of sticking 20% onto private fees - when those people are already paying 100% of the costs for educating their child, how about this:

Parents of children currently in state schools ought to contribute to their education on a means tested basis. There would be no argument over means, it would be a simple reference to the council tax band of the house you live in. We have bands A-H. I would propose that people in band A-F pay nothing. People in band G pay a fixed charge per year and people in band H pay a higher fixed charge per year.

Keir Starmer has used money to buy a massively expensive house, worth in the region of £2m, in the very tight catchment of a lovely state primary. This is buying privilege, same as buying private education. So why does he get away without paying?

We’re band H. Our house cost £460,000. We earn around £80k between us. We live in one of the poorest local authority areas in Scotland. Our local state school is average at best. Am I the mega-rich person you’re looking to target?

But your band H, surely you are rich because you have bought it

Yes education is pretty different, obviously. It’s compulsory remember.

Private school is not compulsory, its a privilege for an elite few.

DarkForces · 28/05/2024 19:23

No worries. Form a political party and stand for election, pass this into law and your wish becomes reality.

Ccchhhhheeeerse · 28/05/2024 19:21

And clearly you misunderstand that we can add VAT to anything we like, surely....so watch out what we add it to next.

Didn't teach about tax in private school, did they!

im not sure where my spare hundreds of thousands are hiding. Actually I remember. They were used to pay private school fees. One kid is finished and other sixth form.

but I’d like KS to contribute some of his spare hundreds of thousands to schooling seeing as he gets it free.

he doesn't get it free he pays tax.

The same as foreign holidays, biscuits, booze, heating, electricity, cars, TV, sky, netflicks.

Matilda456 · 28/05/2024 19:23

Didn't teach about tax in private school, did they!

I have no clue about this. I just mean tax generally. Let's tax all non essentials more.

RubySloth · 28/05/2024 19:26

There is a fairer way, pay the VAT for your privileges of private education.

VeryQuaintIrene · 28/05/2024 19:26

"I thought it through in about 2 mins."

That's plain to see!

The same as foreign holidays, biscuits, booze, heating, electricity, cars, TV, sky, netflicks.

Which we pay vat on.

Crumpetsssss · 28/05/2024 19:27

Oh yes. This is a marvellous idea, and if those of us who need to use schools start paying 20% more for that, then it would make sense for those using the health service to pay for that, those of us who want defence to pay for that, those of us who want to use the roads to pay for those, those on benefits to pay for those…

Oh.

I agree with increasing taxes. I agree with you rethinking what those taxes are spent on.

But the idea of only paying taxes towards what we use? Nah. Shit idea.

If private school=rich
then band H also=rich.

Shit logic isn't it.

That fine.

I am just concerned that this won't solve everything. It's a bit like Brexit.

We need more than this, fine by me, but what else do we need to do to get his country back on its feet.

I think a super tax on anything nonessential.

Kellykukoo · 28/05/2024 19:29

YANBU. Clearly the labour party has run out of ideas and yours is far more equitable than theirs. I'd go a bit further though. All parents across all council tax bands should make proportional yearly contributions towards their children's education. As we all want the best for our children, let all state school parents contribute proportionately to achieving the quality we all want. We can all acknowledge the unavoidable truth - that the UK government can no longer afford to provide good quality education for free to everyone. Why shouldn't we all sacrifice something for our children and the common good? This type of tax would be easy enough for the government to collect and then allocate to schools in the same borough. Exemptions for those who can't afford their contribution can be handled easily too.
We've already got a successful frontrunner in uni fees. University education has gone from being free plus a grant to 9000 pounds fees. We've all grown to accept it and more UK universities have been able to retain their quality because of the fees.

blacksax · 28/05/2024 19:29

It beggars belief that so many privately educated people can be so hard of thinking.

Ccchhhhheeeerse · 28/05/2024 19:30

S33dHead · 28/05/2024 19:27

But pay more, surely, as not essential?

It's not about taxing you because you are rich though, it's a tax on a good which you have chosen to pay for.

Luddite26 · 28/05/2024 19:30

lougher · 28/05/2024 17:52

I use state schools and I do contribute through means testing. It's called taxes, and I'm happy to pay a higher rate of tax to contribute to good public services for all.

This all day long.

Citrusandginger · 28/05/2024 19:31

Well of course the parents of state educated children should pay more taxes to cross subsidise privately educated children.

I can't believe no one dreamed that one up decades ago.

Ccchhhhheeeerse · 28/05/2024 19:31

blacksax · 28/05/2024 19:29

How can you tell who has been privately educated on here?

CoatesCat · 28/05/2024 19:31

Op why do you keep saying rich people send their kids to state schools for free. Do you think they dont pay taxes on their income?
Also do you understand some of the people living in high council tax band houses rent and dont own them?

DarkForces · 28/05/2024 19:32

I'm never sure why people don't call for state schools to be vat free to level the playing field rather than these convoluted 'solutions', but I'm not privately educated so what would I know?

mileenderr · 28/05/2024 19:32

Yep happy for higher taxes to go with the vat on private schools.

taxguru · 28/05/2024 19:34

S33dHead · 28/05/2024 19:27

Which we pay vat on.

No VAT on flights nor public transport
No VAT on biscuits (as they're food)
Reduced rate VAT on heating, gas, electricity, etc.
