Hey everyone,

So, I'm an A-level teacher, and I got offered a job at a school for £42.1k FTE for a 0.6 workload. Is that a good salary? I'll be working 3 days a week, so I'm guessing it'll be pretty hectic!

It's a 0.6 contract, by the way.

What do you think?

Is this in the UK? Are you a mainscale teacher? I think that looks like an upper payscale salary so presumably you must be quite experienced?

Congratulations!

Explor78 · 24/05/2024 07:22

Hey Dabralor,

So, I'm in Berkshire, UK.

I'm not sure if the salary is fair. Someone said it's not that high! I've been teaching for 6 years now and I'm a specialist. But I'm not sure if that justifies the role because I have to co-tutor and do some extracurricular stuff too!

Well what are the school payscales? How does it compare to your previous job? How does it compare to what other schools locally pay?Have you asked for the pay policy?

The recommended payscales for teaching are a matter of public record (although academies don't have to stick to them). Do a bit of googling!

Phineyj · 24/05/2024 07:41

Also is it state or private? If private check on TPS status.

Explor78 · 24/05/2024 18:31

So the school wants me to work 3 days 20 lessons. Along with Saturday event , inset day( Tgey don't pay if inset day falls on non-working day) They are a boarding school. And may be a co- tutor.
Offer is £42500( FTE) On 0.6 basis .

I an really confused! Please help !

I don't really understand how an experienced teacher wouldn't be in a position to judge whether or not something is a good salary? Can't you compare it with what you are currently getting?

How many hours of additional work will you be doing on top of the actual teaching to cover any extra responsibilities? You need to factor this in to determine whether or not it compares well to what you're doing now.

GruntledGoblin · 24/05/2024 18:38

I am a seasoned teacher and I find it difficult to imagine this scenario.

titchy · 24/05/2024 18:44

What are you confused about? Where does £42k sit on the pay scale? How long are the lessons? 20 x 1 hour lessons a week sounds far too many for a 0.6 contract.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/05/2024 18:48

So you'll get 60% of the £42k

If you are in Wales, that's about what you'd be paid on M5 (top of that main pay scale) and if in England, it's what you'd roughly be paid for UPS1.

Thanks for your reply. I’m in the UK.

My current school has 43 lessons a fortnight for a full-time role, and I’m currently doing 0.5 there.

The new role states 20 lessons over 3 days per week, with any additional duty on a pro rata basis. I don’t think it’s justified for the amount of work they want me to do. Tell me if I’m thinking correctly. 🤔

Well, if it's a private school, anything goes tbh. Have you asked about TPS?

Mumoftwinsandasingleton · 24/05/2024 19:40

My husband is on that salary now with 4 years teaching experience and full time. I'd say that's about right on a 0.6 for part time when teaching longer

How long are the lessons?

20 sounds a lot to fit into 3 days a week.

MaybeItsJustTimeToStop · 24/05/2024 19:50

Are the lessons not 50 minutes each? How will you be doing so may in 3 school days? Also if you're pro rata that's £25,500 how does that compare to what you're paid now, it sounds like they're asking a lot of extras on top of the 3 days, only you know how that compares to where you are now though.

GHGN · 25/05/2024 04:47

You didn’t mention where you are in the country, is it a big name boarding school or your subject but I think it is on the lower end.

However 20 lessons are a lot. I only teach 17 hours on a full timetable plus 1-2 hours supervision.

Wordless · 25/05/2024 06:33

The OP says in their second post that they are in Berkshire.

surreygirl1987 · 25/05/2024 21:59

That sounds on the low side to be, but I'm not in Berkshire and location does make a difference. In Surrey, I wouldn't accept a FTE of under £50k (for a day school). If it involved boarding duties and Saturdays I'd definitely expect more! My only experience is of large HMC schools within an hour or so of London though, and I know the smaller indies elsewhere in the country will definitely have lower salaries.

cathcath2 · 26/05/2024 21:26

20 lessons seems an awful lot on 0.6
