PE GCSE with an injury

My son year 10 is doing PE GCSE and since Jan he's had a knee injury, he's had an MRI and we're waiting for results. This means for over a school term he hasn't done the sports he needs to get the physical marks he needs.we have kept the school up to date with medical letters etc.
Does anyone know what will happen if he medically cannot do the physical element of the GCSE? Should I assume he's going to fail this one? Even things like table tennis he can't do let alone his preferred football. He's been playing since he was 4 and this is his first proper injury.

No chance of doing eg Wheelchair basketball? Probably not.

I asked my daughter's teachers this question when she was picking GCSE PE and the teachers seemed to think they could give her a grade based on the level they knew she was at. This obviously only works for sports done in school

Have a talk to the teacher and exams officer directly, they may have a work around or should be looking at one if they know its long term.
They should also be putting him in for special consideration and maybe able to use that to gain some extra marks.

Thanks all, I'm thinking he can't be the first to be in this predicament. I'm hoping he hasn't done too much damage and can catch up but I'm thinking ahead just in case

We are in the same situation. Terrible run of luck with a broken leg caused by school football followed by knee injury awaiting MRI scan. The problem we have is DS teacher has marked him very harshly for the practical side so we don’t feel his predicted grades reflect a fair mark.

We had this for Nat 5 PE (roughly GCSE equivalent in Scotland). They would accept videos of matches if we had any (unfortunately mine managed to break BOTH legs consecutively so had over a year out of rugby, which is his main sport so no videos available). In the end he was just fit enough to do a non contact sport on I think the last possible assessment day (badminton iirc which I didn't think he could even play) and that was enough to get reasonable marks. If he hadn't been fit to do anything I think they were going to apply for special circumstances but I'm not sure if there was a cap to that mark.

Thanks all, glad to see it's not just us, I'm hoping he can at least do table tennis or badminton to get some practical results.

Just had a look at the list what about swimming or golf?

Theblackdogagain · 26/04/2024 10:02

He's not great at swimming due to a genetic condition. I don't know anything about golf or know anyone who plays so I'm not even sure how to access that? The closest we've got is crazy golf 🤣🤣

I did look into archery as he's pretty good at that but our local archery club has a one year waiting list for new starters.

Which exam board is it? Is there any guidance on their website?

My daughter dislocated her knee during sport at school during her GCSE, she was in a brace and couldn’t do any impact sport for 12 months. No consideration was allowed, they argued it’s a two year course and an alternative had to be found. They also marked her down for it!!
