Esher College

Hello

Possibly considering Esher College for 6th form for my daughter.

It would be great to hear any experiences. Slightly concerned about moving her for the last 2 years in case it's difficult to meet a new social group whilst also doing A levels?

Thanks in advance ⭐️

Not direct, but lots of friends DCs chose it. All very different children and with very different academic and not academic interests and all did very well, even the one who struggled to get out of bed in the mornings.

Meeting new friends is a non-issue there, because they are all in the same boat. It would be much harder to join eg a different school sixth form at that point.

Do go to the open evening, if you can. You will get an idea of the size from that, which was what helped my DC decide. Plus make sure public transport makes sense. That was the other drawback for us, since it would have been multiple buses or trains and a walk.

My niece had an awful time there last year with bullies, yes, even afte leaving her old school. She didn't know them before.

Awful 😞

Both my DC went there, as their schools didn't (at the time) have 6th forms.

It's open access, which was good as DC2 didn't do well in their GCSEs. But also very academic when they're there, so they are pushed/encouraged.

Good social lives, from what I remember. But also, very white/middle-class, which was different from their school - and which both (also white/middle-class, tbh) noticed and felt was not a good thing.

The area is v middle class and white. Not many Asians and no black families locally

The local thing isn't an issue though @BeakyPIinders, as students at Esher travel quite long distances to get there.

But yes, lack of 'non-white' students was noticed (negatively) by both my DC.
