Relocating to Trafford

We’re researching a move to Trafford. I don’t know the areas at all, please help!

Which are the nicest areas? We’d like somewhere safe, lots to do in the town centre, but a quieter area for our home.

Primary schools - We have two boys, aged 5 & 2. The eldest is in reception already so it’d be an in year admission. Am I dreaming to think I’ll get him into a good primary school? Are they all oversubscribed? The younger will start school in Sept 2025.

secondary school - I know it’s early to be thinking of this, but where are the best schools? It’s too early to tell whether grammar is the best route so we’d like flexibility.

We have a top budget of £850k, although we’d rent first.

Thank you!

Hi, I live in Trafford. Your budget would get you a nice house in Timperley or a really nice house in Sale. If you don’t need a massive house then you could also get something in Altrincham. If you are considering grammar then it really needs to be one of those areas. I would warn you that it’s absolutely cutthroat at secondary stage though for school places both in grammar and in the better comps. Catchment areas are tiny and getting smaller every year as the best schools are massively oversubscribed. There’s also quite a lot of Catholic schools so it’s a bit easier if you are Catholic. Most of the primaries are good so even if you didn’t get into a one of your choice, it’s unlikely to be dire.

Thank you, this is really helpful. Which are the grammar schools and good comps which are v strict for catchment areas? No, we’re not Catholic…

sorry if this is a really silly question (I’m from the East Mids where we don’t have the grammar system) - for the grammars do they need to pass the entrance exam, and then also live within a small catchment area?

Personally I would look around Longford Park in Stretford. I find Sale/Timperley/Altrincham a bit too suburban for me. Got access to great primary schools (Victoria Park is good my 4 went there). Lovely community loads going on. City centre is only 20 min on the tram. Walking distance to Charlton (loads of bars and restaurants). The grammar school system is awful though. 2 of mine went 2 didn't. The good thing about Longford Park area is you are near enough to access Manchester schools like Chorlton High /CHS if they don't pass and if they do pass the 11 plus they will definitely get into Stretford Grammar which is one of the less pushy schools and had good pastoral care.

There is one exam which covers all of the grammars. There is one basic pass mark and then each school says what their individual pass mark will be. Briefly speaking, Alty grammars require the highest marks, then Sale then Stretford and Urmston. There is a higher pass mark for out of catchment offers. For the Altrincham grammars catchment is WA14, WA15 and M33. It’s pretty much the same for Sale but with preference given for M33. For Stretford and Urmston you basically have to live in those areas. In terms of houses they’re not as sought after as Alty because they’re not as green and leafy though there are some gorgeous houses to be had at a much more reasonable price. Sale is in between. There are literally thousands of applicants for the places and it’s become harder recently because of the large number of people who’ve moved from Hong Kong to the area. Basically, it’s a commitment to tutoring etc if you want to go down the grammar route. If you don’t, Wellington is highly sought after in Timperley but catchment has realistically become half a mile (it says 0.9 on the website but that is skewed because of siblings etc). North Cestrian is also sought after as a good but less academic school but again, it has less than a mile catchment (it is getting an expansion though, so maybe this will change). If private is an option, there are some really highly regarded ones in the city centre and they run buses to take the children from pretty much everywhere.
For primary, I can only really speak to Timperley/Altrincham area. There are quite a few preps, and the Bollin the Willows are very highly regarded. Heyes Lane is good though has big classes. There really aren’t any poor primaries though.

Wow thank you for this. I can see why you described it as cutthroat. I must admit the grammar school system puts me off a little. It sounds like you have to be really organised to get into the catchment area in advanced, with no guarantee at all. My kids are only young so at this age I have no idea what would suit them best, and it seems likely they might end up at different schools.

Are there just as nice areas with cheaper houses outside the catchment areas? Just thinking if we could get a 3/4 bed for £500-600k then opting out of the system and going into private might be better…

It’s not for the faint-hearted! 🤣 There are plenty of areas where you can get a lovely house for that money and there is no catchment at all for private so you could move anywhere in Manchester. It really depends what you’re after eg: do you want to be able to walk to the metro? Do you want a green area? Must it be in Trafford or just the general area? Personally, I’d avoid Stretford because for all it’s got some lovely houses, it is very urban and quickly shifts from lovely to ‘rough’. Sale and Brooklands both have lovely affordable houses, shopping centres, good schools and have the metro but parts of Brooklands aren’t actually in Trafford. If you wanted to be closer to town, there are some lovely parts in knutsford (more expensive), Didsbury and Flixton (cheaper).

JimmyGrimble · 12/04/2024 23:56

Sale also has some very rough areas. In your position I’d look at Chorlton and Didsbury. Very good state options, plenty of private options and lots of kids go to the Trafford grammars (if that’s what you’re after) although the state options are really good also.

I agree that Stretford around the Longford Park area would be a good place to look.
