Ofsted visit advice

Eclipseboatwoman48 · 07/04/2024 18:00

The SEMH setting where I’ve recently started teaching is due an Ofsted visit after Easter, and as the lead teacher in my subject area, I’m wondering what info I should have ready for the inspector.
I’ve been through many inspections in my career, but I’ve returned to the classroom after a long break, and have never been lead teacher before, so any advice very welcome.
I’m confident in my classroom ability, but don’t want to let anyone down in terms of ‘evidence’, and also don’t want to bother the Head during the holiday.
Thanks to anyone who has any ideas.

What you want them to learn and why. What you are teaching, in what order and why. How you adapt it for different abilities and how you know they are making good progress? I'm not a teacher so could be wrong but I'd imagine its along those lines.

Thanks, polkadot. Most of that info is in each individual scheme of work, so I’m not sure whether to double up on it or not. Inspections have changed so much since I started teaching in ‘98, and I’m no longer au-fair with what they want these days, apart from the actual teaching side of things. And I think my years out of the classroom are making me doubt my ability to make decisions. 🥴

They’ll want to know why you’ve ordered the SOW in the order you have.

As long as you are confident with your sequencing and can rationalise your decisions, you’ll be fine.

I have found them much more supportive of late - but this must be me.

Have you had the call or just anticipating they might visit?

Might*

Don't worry about 'bothering' the Head - they'll want the visit to go well, so contact them.

Is there no support available at work? It's nerve wracking having ofsted 😬

Clear feedback with a consistent framework on learner work which shows evidence of being fed back to the learner.

Learners able to detail distance travelled and progression.

Evidence of personal development embedded in your curriculum eg Prevent, British Values.

I would recommend printing off the Ofsted EIF which will give you loads of information- in our recent inspection the inspectors referred to it constantly.

They turned up few weeks before Easter but Head was out of school that day, and because we’re such a small, specialist setting, it was essential she was there for the visit so they delayed it.

LOADS of support! 🤩 But because I’m new, and the most experienced teacher, I want to get it right.
