Failed dyslexia test

DS is currently at uni and initially had a dyslexia/dyscalculia screening which showed high probability of dyslexia/ dyscalculia. We then paid for an assessment. He has scored low for dyslexia but the assessor believes that DS may have a ‘global developmental delay’ as the results show he’s working age is equivalent to an 8 year old!

If DS has not got dyslexia could they still have dyscalculia? Also DS has always been behind academically and has been ‘slower’ compared to my other kids. My question is where can I get help from? Where can I get him assessed for ‘global development delay’. Really scared for his future.

I would suggest he arranges for an assessment by an educational psychologist rather than a dyslexia assessor who fancies themselves as an armchair psychologist. Global developmental delay is a diagnosis usually given to children under the age of 5 who haven’t met 2 or more of their developmental milestones. Over the age of 5 it would usually be referred to as a learning or intellectual disability.

An educational psychologist will be able to assess for dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, and other specific learning difficulties.

What type of assessment was it?
Working age of 8 in what areas? It seems counter intuitive to be working at that level, yet achieved the entry requirements for a degree. Sonething seems off there.

As above, if not already seen, an Educational Psychologist would be my port of call.

What A levels did they do and what grades did they achieve?
It really isn't possible for someone working at age 8 level to do well enough to get into uni so something is def off with that suggestion.

ggggggooooo · 05/04/2024 14:37

What grades did they get at a-level? What are they studying at uni.

I don't know many 8 year olds that are at uni

Agree with pp's that it would be unusual for someone with gdd working at the level of an 8 year old to have made it to Uni without support in place. What does the assessor/uni propose as next steps? How did your dc cope with GCSE's and A-levels or equivalent?

KathieFerrars · 05/04/2024 21:55

This is daft. They can't have GDD without you noticing. That is quite severe cognitive deficiency. Can you let me know what tests they have done and then I can comment. He should have a report. Yes, you can have dyscalculia without dyslexia. What did he get for GCSE maths?
