Is your child receiving first aid lessons in School?

Basic First Aid is now part of the PSHE National Curriculum in state-funded Primary and Secondary Schools in the UK, so all children aged 4-16 years old must be taught Basic First Aid which is stated in the 2019 Department of Education document. However, due to COVID-19 some schools have delayed adding these lessons to their curriculum and some parents aren't even aware that First Aid is now a compulsory part of their child's education. So, have you checked with your child's school what they are doing to cover these lessons?

Yes. My daughter goes to a SEN school and she did first aid a few weeks ago.

When you say the UK, do you mean the English National Curriculum?

Mine did a first aid rotation (2 weeks so 4 lessons) in PE last term (year 8).

National Curriculum in England and Curriculum of Excellence in Scotland.

It's great that Basic First Aid is now a required part of the school curriculum, but the reality is that not all schools have fully implemented it yet—especially after the disruptions of COVID-19. Many parents might not even be aware that their children are supposed to be learning these essential life skills. It’s worth checking in with your child’s school to see how they’re covering First Aid and whether they’re actually delivering these lessons. Knowing how to handle emergencies, even in a basic way, could make all the difference one day!
