Not left-handed is he?
I fond DD was being taught totally wrong about ehr writing and even though she finds it so flipping hard they dont wait for her or get ehr to learn something else they just keep pushing her further, so whilst she is still trying to form letters they're tryign to get her to write joined up

yes he is left-handed but it is up and down in a continuous line with no spaces my husband cant understand why when he has an above ave reading abil i have tried many different shaped pens

DD is exactly the same, no spaces between letters or words etc have you had a look at the way his pen/paper are held?
I noticed DD was writing 'hooked' so it's practically impossible.
I've now told the school her writing is to be done the way on here I was amazed at how much easier she ahs ound it to write already.
I'd also suggest telling his teachers you don't want him to do the same writing as the rest of the class, it's important his writing can be understood, not bloody calligraphy.

Have you thought of dyspraxia?
My friends son has always had brilliant reading ability and is a bright boy...but his writing is just really odd. It doesn't make any sense how he does it.
Anyway..the school never picked it up but she took him to the gp and he referred him straight away. He was diagnosed dyspraxic fairly quickly.
How are his other fine and gross motor skills?

sleepwalker · 26/03/2008 21:48

Thanks had a look and it could be helpful his problem is he cant see his last letter cos he is always covering his work my worry is he almost through his 1st year of secondary school and no 1 has said anything to us

No-one has given DD any help either she just got told to keep trying
I got help from some MNers after coming across a thread, see if you can get him to try writing like that and if it makes a difference, i really was amazed at how much it has improved DD's writing, however now my struggle is to make sure the school keep checking how she holds her pen/paper.
Hope it helps, I know how demoralising they can find it when their work is great but unreadable

sleepwalker · 26/03/2008 21:51

My ds has Aspergers sleepwalker (he's 10) He is also left-handed and although his writing still isn't great compared to other areas at school, it has really improved in the last 2 years or so. When he was assessed for Aspergers, they also picked up that he was mildly dyspraxic.
He does not hook his arm over to write though....like i know lots of left-handers do...so maybe that makes a big difference.

sleepwalker · 26/03/2008 22:08

ds does not hook arm...and we have tried many .....many different writting pens, paper and even back to basics back to what they say he should have learnt as a baby which then makes me feel that i may have missed something important that i didnt miss with my other children ds also has an above verbal abil

I have had amazing results using "Write from the Start" with my siz year old son. Its not babyish, but very repetitive and I have no idea how an 11 year old would take to "Write from the Start"

Lois Addy has written other books for older children that might be worth trying.

www.amazon.co.uk/Speed-Up-Kinaesthetic-Programme-Handwriting/dp/1855033860

I have never used this book, Lois Addy really knows what she is talking about in "Write from the Start".

DD16 is dyspraxic and has always had trouble with her wrting. She used a wrting slope for a while which really helped her.
Her writng is much better now and she is able to write with a normal pen,but uses a yoro pen if she needs to write quickly.
She is getting a scribe when she takes her GCSE's in May.
