Business Studies or Sociology?

Hi all,

my DD is narrowing down her GCSE choices and has one choice left.

Drama, PE and a few similar subjects are on offer (that really aren’t her interests) and I urged her to choose business studies as it seemed to me in the course brochure to be the most generally useful.

Since I’ve said this, a few different people have mentioned that Sociology would be much more useful in today’s world.

if you had this choice which would you take?

(DD has no real decision on a career as yet, so is trying to choose generally things she is interested in)

Either is fine. Business (not business studies btw) is more common at GCSE but I imagine you can take the A level without it. Sociology GCSE is less common so not having it closes no doors.

Which one would your DD prefer? It’s her that has to do the work after all. It’s not really about subjects being useful in today’s world at GCSE level imho. Both will teach useful skills anyway.

She has no preference, can’t decide. Nothing else left in that column interests her so it’s definitely between between these two. Good to know both would be useful.

A family member has said Sociology is considered easier?

Did the family member take GCSE sociology and GCSE business in 2018 or since then? If not then “it’s considered easier” is fairly meaningless tbh.

Has she looked in detail at the specs? Is there nothing on either that jumps out at her? Would she be more interested in Human Resources, marketing and finance? Or sociological perspectives on education, families, crime and social stratification? They’re pretty different.

@Jessforless

Which other subjects are listed in the column which features Business Studies and Sociology, OP?

What has she already selected from the other columns?

My daughter loves sociology. Bonus is she's doing it for a level and as there is quite a crossover of syllabus so it's an easy one.

At GCSE no one will care much. They won’t define her career or uni options. So look at what’s involved and choose the one which looks more interesting to her. Business is about how business operates and DD did it for A level. Sociology is interesting too. Neither has more weight than the other ant gcse and employers most likely won’t care.

DD loving Sociology and I've been impressed how relevant what they are doing is and the skills are great for future studies. I wouldnt say its easier than any other subject. They do plenty of sociology theory & the technical/maths side of research/analysis but also been defining their own research projects, finding/reviewing recent case studies, plus developing lots critical questioning skills evaluating the quality of info theyre presented with.
DD may do it at A level too.

Cross over from gcse to A level or crossover of business to sociology?
