Ds starts school in January!

Anyway I need to get him kitted out so was wondering about pumps for PE - Do I look in shoe shops or sports shops? I presume they are all pretty much the same? Anything else I need to think about? Got the name tapes on order at last - forfeit for all party games over christmas will be sewing one on

BHS/M&S did have pumps, not sure if they'll have them in now what with Xmas. Will he need P.E.shorts/T.shirt, lunch box, shoe labels? My dd didn't "need" a pencil case but REALLY wanted something to put in her book bag on the first day,and now it's useful for when she does her homework. HTH.

Katharine

Just a little tip, they make strapper pumps for pe now, much easier than little ones trying to get the elasticated type on.
Woolworths sell them, I don't know where else but they are a brilliant invention.
Check with the school too, I have bought loads of daps only to find that they do PE in bare feet and only use the daps for outside PE in the summer

I think Asda have the ones with the little velcro straps too. At our school they wear pumps for PE indoors as well.
Lots of luck with school - hope you both enjoy it!

Good idea, robin - also get a white or silver gel pen just in case you have any black labels to write on! (Some of our school sweatshirts do.)

The Start Rite velcro strap pumps are brilliant, although unfortunately much more expensive than Woolies. However they do seem to be a bit wider than the cheaper ones so good for my 5 year old's chubby little feet! John Lewis often have them on special offer so worth looking if you're near one.

I found the velcro strap ones came off dd's feet when walking so didn't buy them. They sort of undid themselves. Got the old-fashioned elasticated ones instead. She has narrow feet though.

candy did you get yours from johnny lou lou's? I often see bargains like that but don't always have dd with me. are the sizes of the velcro ones pretty accurate?

bundle · 03/12/2002 12:00

(dd has lovely chubby feet too )

I have always bought mine from Tesco - I think only the larger stores stock them - they have a double velcro strap which seem to keep in place better than the single strapped ones. Tesco also do (well did in Sept) PE Kit packs which are two white T Shirts and two pairs of black shorts for £9.99.
Other things I would recommend are the Namemark labels - they have a website, they do pre-named shoe labels and excellent plastic labels for lunchboxes and drink bottles which don't fall off in the wash, these are also good on calculators, gameboys, rulers etc.
To be honest, just try and make sure everything you bur, ds can put on/take off himself, elasticated waisted trousers, velcro shoes, sweatshirt with plenty of room in, easy to do up coat etc. This helps to make them a bit more independent and I always feel sorry for the kids that are always last getting ready after PE only because the Mum's insist on sending them in a belt or a front burttoning dress!!
It would probably be worth getting a uniform list from the school office.

Katherine · 03/12/2002 16:33

Thanks everyone. Hopeing to avoid the lunchboxes for a while (school dinner smelt wonderful when we visited) and I think I just need a sweatshirt from the School for the uniform. Will check out woolies for the pumps and see how we get on but I suppose I need to look out some shorts too. The horrible truth that I should have done all this shopping in September when the shops were full of school stuff instead of tinsel has dawned!

Bundle - yes I would say that the Start Rite sizes in John lewis were pretty much spot on but please don't just take my word for it!

bundle · 04/12/2002 11:57

thanks Candy, I know they're v good at taking things back if they don't fit anyway..I was just looking for a cheapo alternative to Doodles which dd had in the summer and might be a nice indoor shoe for the winter

Rhiannon · 04/12/2002 15:02

Clarks sell them too.

janh · 04/12/2002 22:49

Katherine, I was in a large Woolies today and they had lots of stock of all the school kit...

Katherine · 06/12/2002 12:17

Hi all, got the pumps from woolies today (they do both elastic and velco ones by the way but school states elastic) - only £1.99 - was quite impressed. No shorts though! Now I've just got to make a pump bag although I don't have a sewing machine. Can you buy them? I'd ask a friend to sew it but seems a bit too much at this time of year.

Katherine, you can buy them, tho I'm not sure where from, but if you have a friend who sews you only need a smidgen of fabric folded in half and stitched up 2 sides with a bootlace through the top, for a good sewer it would take about 5 minutes!

Do you have a market locally? You might be able to buy one there...failing that someone on here will know where else. (Mothercare?)
