11+ Application

Hi

Just wondering. If the 11+ private education outcome is unfavourable can someone tell me what the options are? In this case she has an assured place but doesn't want to take it.

DD has applied to no state schools.

Is there a chance of making a representation to other private schools not applied for before after the deadline?

Is there an option to enquire at local state schools?

Or is the only option to accept the assured place?

Would just appreciate as many views as possible really from those aware of the process.

What entry year are you talking about?
You should always apply to state comp schools in Yr 6 for Yr 7 entry as a safe bet in case of 11+ failure or you decide not to take a place, you can then reject the offer when it comes in.
For private schools again you apply and go through the process before their cut off date.
You can't not apply to any other schools in Yr 6 for Yr 7 entry and then expect any of them to accept a late application.

DD is currently in yr6 and will move to yr7 in September.

Most private schools will have offered by now. You could call others after acceptance deadlines have passed, usually first week of March, to see if they would consider a late application, although a place may not be made available until after Easter or just be added to a waiting list. Likewise get a state application in asap as there will be movement once offers are made on March 1st.

So you haven't applied to any schools other than the one she has now rejected?
If so then you have been incredibly naive.
Why has she rejected the place without any other option to go to?

Your only option for a state school is to apply to the LA. You will then probably have to wait a while and you will get a place at the nearest school which has a space. You will have no choice in this school and it could be a distance away.
If you can afford private then you now need to contact them and ask as every school is different.
You run the serious risk of not having a school place for her in September so I would personally get her to accept the assured place at the grammar school.

Thanks. The issue is I'd have to accept the one place before deadline or else I'd have nothing to fall back on.

The state option could be worth pursuing though.

You won't get a response from either route before your acceptance deadline. Why is your dc resistant , maybe address that?

TheSquareMile · 22/02/2024 14:49

@Jonny234

Re the assured place, why isn't it acceptable?

What kind of school is offering the place?

Jonny234 · 22/02/2024 14:50

It's just we all have cold feet and would now like other options. It's a SW london indie.

You would be incredibly foolish to reject this place without another place elsewhere. What if no other school has space and come Sept your child is without a school or in a school miles away because that's the only option?

You're absolutely right. I had researched before asking the question and the best bet appears to be the yr8 occasional places route. I did wonder if there were any other eventualities I had not come across.

@Jonny234

Could I ask what led to the cold feet?

twistyizzy · 22/02/2024 14:57

Just as an aside, we were always going down the Yr 7 private route but we still applied to state schools (well before the end Oct deadline) so that she had a back up plan in case anything unforseen happened.

tennissquare · 22/02/2024 14:59

From SW London your private options for a year 7 place in Sept are along the lines of The Hall Wimbledon, Ewell Castle, Downsend, Hampton Court House. Your state options are local state schools near you that aren't full for year 7 after 1st March. (Not many).
You would do best to stick with your current plan, apply to a state school with a late entry and apply to private schools for entry in Year 8 (ie taking an entrance exam later this year).

PatriciaHolm · 22/02/2024 15:00

Your Local Authority will offer her a space in a state school, but you have of course missed the application deadline so your application will be considered after all the on-time applications, so you would get a place wherever there was space at that point. You can then go on waiting lists for other state schools and there is usually a fair amount of movement.
