Encouraging full potential in year 3 boy

Sorry could not think of any good title without it sounding a bit twattish!

My year 3 (8 year old) boy has always been a great learner and student. From reception until end of year 2 he’s excelled in the 3 main subjects at school. Socially he does well and seems to enjoy the whole school experience.

i noticed that he seemed to lose confidence in himself a little at the start of year 3 but encouraged him where I could and he still read lots and happily did his homework.

His teacher tells me that due to chatter and not listening his learning levels gave now dropped and he’s working as ‘expected’, which is fine in and of itself, but I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced similar and with a bit of maturity that he might be able to settle in class, chat less and learn to keep the fun stuff for break time.

So as not to dripfeed weve tried lots of different measures with the school to stop him chatting (different tables, ear defenders, fiddle toys) but to no avail.

or maybe I’m worried over nothing and he’ll find his own way back?!

thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Have you considered ADHD?

I’d lie if I said it hadn’t crossed my mind as he’s a quirky soul but as it’s never flagged by anyone I guessed he must be NT.

My DD has ADHD and we've had some success just asking her every day how much she wrote in English, whether she got onto the challenge in maths and making it a big deal if she does.

Fwiw research suggests fidgets don't improve attentiveness but they make children stop invading others spaces so they look more attentive/less disruptive. I've banned my DD from them but she does use headphones and uses a screen on her desk to shut out the chatter.
