Help with university please

My daughter is hoping to go to university in the next year or two & I would be grateful for any advice re funding etc
I am divorced & earn a low income. My ex however has a good salary, but never pays for anything ( always in debt). When my daughter applies, can she just put my income, or will both have to be entered?
It would be great if anyone in the same situation could advise me. I would hate for my daughter to not go because her Dad is an absolutely idiot.

She can apply for a loan, I think it’s main carer income that’s counted( I stand to be corrected). She’ll probably have to work in the holidays, I have three kids at uni, they all have holiday jobs, it’s hard, but with the right frame of mind they get by

When I applied for ds only my income was taken into account. He then received his loan and grant (Wales).

It's generally household income that's counted, so if you had a partner living with you, it would be his income not your daughter's dad's. And if the dad doesn't pay his way, that's taken into consideration.
The Facebook SFE page is very helpful. As is this:
www.gov.uk/apply-for-student-finance/household-income
There are also bursaries etc for people fitting the criteria. My daughter got an accommodation bursary in her first year. Some of them are automatic and don't need to be applied for.
If you follow the FB page, they tell you when to apply etc.

The loans are calculated on your household income so if you don't live with a partner it'll be just your income.

@Joy69 , 3 tips:
Move to the higher education board on Mumsnet, it's very active.

Join the Facebook group WIWIKAU - it has over 50k members, it's incredibly active and you can search on almost every question

Follow Martin Lewis's moneysavingexpert website student section on university funding.

These 3 sources of knowledge will be immensely helpful.

@Joy69

Has she had any thoughts about careers after University and her academic subjects, OP?

Joy69 · 09/02/2024 00:24

Thank you everyone you have all been very helpful.
TheSquareMile - She has a couple of possible options & is currently on the scholars programme at college. The programme is supportive with career advice and she will also be attending summer school.
Maybeicanhelpyou - She has been working since she was 15 & also has 2 jobs in the holidays. I'm very lucky that she is so focused, long may it continue.........bedrooms still a mess. Can't have it all ways 😂

Is she considering a subject which might attract some form of bursary/scholarship at Uni?

TizerorFizz · 09/02/2024 09:25

@Joy69 Wuth uni choices, some cities are cheaper than others. Uni accommodation prices vary a lot too. Swanky en suite costs a lot more than older with shared bathrooms.

You need to look at earnings thresholds and see if she will get the maximum loan and see what this means for affording accommodation. If you are not expected to contribute, I can assure you, your DD will not be the worse off! Many parents are expected to contribute, but cannot afford it. My DN got a £2000 bursary as well and certainly didn’t need to work in term time with the max maintenance loan. She had more to spend than her friends. So check what you can get for DD. Check where might be cheaper to live (North) and don’t expect her to work all hours at uni at the expense of studying. Holidays are for working for money if she’s going to do a full on uni course.
