My ds is quite bright. Not G&T, but bright. He is 8 and reads at a 12 year old level, and he finds everything else pretty easy to understand.
The trouble is that he daydreams in class until the last minute, then doesn't have enough time to finish his work. I don't think that its too easy - He does this with nearly everything, and has always been this way.

Anyone have any good ideas for getting him to just crack on?

My two have both been like this at times and have got over it. I think the solution has been:
Long discussions with us (post parents' evenings and so on) explaining to him that it is important for them to crack on and complete his work.
Having interesting/exciting/genuine extension work set by the teacher for children who finish the work. (Rather than just 'more of the same'.)
Also dogged persistence on the part of the teacher that he has to do his best, and not completing the work is not good enough.

Have you discussed this with his teacher?

Yeah, the teacher brought it up, at Parent's evening. It has been a problem throughout, but his teacher now seems committed to trying to sort it out with us.

We have discussed how important it is to get things done, how much better it feels when his work is done, but nothing really seems to work.

He (ds) came up with the idea of a stopwatch to motivate himself, but I am worried that it will become a toy.

Don't they hae the consequence of staying in at playtime to finish it? Or doesn't that bother him?

I know this is nothing new, but how on earth do I stop myself arguing with my six year old about her piano practice? She seems to take great delight in winding me up by not doing any practise (should be 2 x 5 mins per week)and I fall for it every time. Should I stop the lessons if she won't practise or is that just me being over the top? This subject has become a battleground against all my better judgement and is doing my head in.

Oh shit, just posted on a totally different threaed. Please ignore!

first: Yours is my fav name on mn!

Second: I think there is that consequence, but not sure it is enforced for not finishing work - or at least not all the time. I would be happy to have him stay in if he doesn't do his work.

Not sure how happy he would be though

Awww shucks! I like yours too

Yes, I've always said to my dds that if they waste the teachers time then it's perfectly reasonable for her to waste THEIR time. They hate me when I agree with the teacher
