Blue badge parking at school

We have the usual limited blue badge parking at school. We have a lot of blue badge holders, but the school have been handing out school branded laminated blue badges to any old Tom, Dick or Harry. They aren't even requesting medical proof of anything. This means lazy parents are getting these badges and taking the disabled spaces away from those that actually need it. Is this actually allowed??

You mean the school is creating their own disabled parking badges to be used in their car park, and they've printed more than the spaces allow for? That's extremely bizarre. I imagine it's a private car park so they can do what they like but I don't understand their logic at all here.

They have both. Normal blue badges are ok to use the blue badge bays, but they also hand out their own disabled laminated badges to non blue badge holders so they can use the spaces as well. Some of these have absolutely no business to be taking up disabled spaces, these people always arrive to the school an hour before the end of the day so the actual blue badge holders struggle to park.

If it's a private carpark they can essentially do what they like.

Potentially they've put a system in place to help students and their families temporarily for things such as illness or injury.

I'm not sure if such a system could in itself be discriminatory because it's reducing the number of spaces available to those who need them as opposed to people they've decided can use them also.

Put in a complaint and see what happens.

I would imagine these families are facing difficulties that other parents are not privacy to, quite rightly.

I'm amazed there's any parking at the school at all. All the schools dd went to it's been on street parking only. Could you request a proper disabled bay on the street, so talk to the council. Because only someone with a formal blue badge could use it.

CCLCECSC · 29/01/2024 11:53

Are these for staff members or students who are bring dropped off? It does seem bizarre.

As its private land there is probably very little that can be done about this other than a strongly worded complaint.

Smartiepants79 · 29/01/2024 11:58

Do actual ow anything about why these families are being given the option to use the disabled parking?
You must know that not all issues are visible issues and that it’s really not your business. If it’s private land I suspect they can do as they please. A complaint might make them review the situation but I doubt it will make any discernible difference.

DemBonesDemBones · 29/01/2024 14:57

You have no idea if they need the badges or not, and rightly so. Raise it with the head if you like but I'm sure you'll be told the same.

It's council land so presumably the normal rules of the road apply as opposed to private parking rules.

I would put in a complain with the local council, both your local counsellor and the dept that monitors parking.
